Coca-Cola and the Ecomar Foundation donate 30,000 cans of product to the Food Bank
More than 200 children from the towns of Puerto Pollença (Mallorca), Punta Umbria (Huelva), Vilagarcía de Arousa (Pontevedra), Oeiras (Lisbon), Jávea (Alicante) and Medina de Riyeco (Valladolid) have participated this year in the campaign "Cleanliness of Costas," which the Ecomar and Coca-Cola Foundation have organized as usual for a decade, collecting waste from different points of our coastline. This initiative, led and created by the Ecomar Foundation and promoted by Coca- Cola, aims to raise awareness among the smaller ones of the importance of keeping our seas and coasts clean and to teach them to recycle the waste by depositing them in the appropriate containers. This year, children who have participated in this initiative have managed to collect 1,251 kilos of waste, 57% more than the previous year. Coca-Cola has awarded the work of the small volunteers of the Ecomar Foundation by converting every kilo of waste collected to the product of Coca-Cola, in order for the Food Banks to reach people who are in a disadvantaged situation. These actions are part of the commitment of Coca- Cola to the environment. A commitment that Coca- Cola develops through its environmental strategy that includes more than 80 actions grouped into four key axes: water, climate, packaging and sustainable agriculture. The delivery of the 30,024 cans of drinks that Coca- Cola has donated has taken place to help those who are in a disadvantaged situation of which more than 3,000 will go to the Madrid Food Bank and the rest will be distributed among the Food Bank closest to the area where children and volunteers have collected waste. The event was attended by Ana Gascón, Director of Corporate Responsibility of Coca-Cola; Ana Callol, Director of Corporate Responsibility of Coca-Cola European Partners; Theresa Zabell, President of the Ecomar Foundation, Francisco García, President of Banco de Alimentos and Miguel Fernández, Commercial Director of FESBAL. The president of the Ecomar Foundation, said "We have been dedicated a decade to taking care of our environment through this Costa Cleaning program and I see our calls being much more successful. We create awareness that our seas are a source of life and wealth, so we must try to keep them as blue as possible. It's a long-term job, which without Coca- Cola we couldn't do. Thank you therefore to all who have given your help this year.".
The nautical clubs, attached to the Grímpola Ecomar Programme, have played a key role in this initiative as they have been the centre of operations of the Ecomar Foundation volunteers. The first action of this solidarity and environmental plan took place at the Real Club Náutico de Puerto Pollença, in Mallorca, with 39 children and 12 volunteers who collected 51 kilos of waste. At the Real Club Náutico de Punta Umbria, 48 children from the School of Vela obtained 659 kilos from the island of Saltés. In Vilagarcía of Arousa, the School of Sailing of the Casino Liceo provided 28 children who collected 206 kilos from the island of Cortegada. This year, the Ecomar Foundation crossed the border and moved to the Portuguese town of Oeiras, in Lisbon where 30 children from the sailing school managed to take out 21 kilos of the 500 meters that measure the seaweed. Jávea also had its cleaning after having suffered a great fire in its surroundings, in which 30 children from Port de Xíbia school managed to remove 167 kilos. At the end of the program, 40 students from the San Vicente de Paul College, from the Vallisoletana town of Medina de Riyeco, managed to remove 147 kilos of waste from the Castile Canal. In total, 1,251 kilos of waste were collected and recycled in the different containers.
