The "Astoria" that sank the mythical "Andrea Doria" in 1956 is repairing in Vigo

The Astoria will sail for a Portuguese or British shipyard, where it will be subjected to maintenance work in dam.
The Lusian flag cruise is located in the Port of Vigo Astoria. which is doing various maintenance and repair work at the so-called Pier de Comercio, which closes the eastern part of the Sports Port of the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo. The ship today Portuguese was previously called "Athena" and it is a small cruise, extremely well preserved but very different from that which was launched on February 21, 1948 with the name "Stockholm" which covered the regular line between the Swedish port of Göteburg and New York. It is one of the most ancient cruises in the world, with a legendary story in its log book: the sinking of the mythical Italian "Andrea Doria" on the distant night of July 25, 56.

The "Stockolm" entering New York with its broken bow, following the collision with the "Andrea Doria" in July 1956
On July 25, 1956, the "Andrea Doria," sank very close to the coast of Nantucket in Newfoundland after colliding, after a succession of misfortunes and confusion, with another passenger ship, the MV Stockholm, from the Swedish America Line. The ship was making its 101st journey across the Atlantic between Genoa and New York. The Stockholm bow destroyed the side of Andrea Doria, scaring quickly and leaving half the lifeboats unusable. Despite this setback, the good construction of the Italian Line ship, which took 11 hours to sink, and the good work of the crew allowed to save almost all the people on board it, with only 46 people dying from the "Andrea Doria" and 5 from the "Stockholm." The impact of the robust Stockholm bow, reinforced to be able to open the way in ice-cold seas, as well as the almost transverse form of the impact, would be the detonants for the one considered as the most luxurious transatlantic of the time to end their days at the bottom of the sea, where they still rest their remains on their sand bed at 77 meters deep. Meanwhile, the "Stockholm," after rescuing many survivors of the sinister ship, managed to reach New York by its means, showing its completely destroyed bow.
