The General Archive of the Marina "Alvaro de Bazan," located in the Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz in the Vero del Marqués (Ciudad Real), will be closed to the public from Friday, November 25, due to a lack of technical staff. Visits to the Palacio-Museo Alvaro de Bazan continue on their usual schedule, from Tuesday to Sunday from 09: 00 to 13: 00 and from 16: 00 to 18: 00.

The General Archive of the Navy "Alvaro de Bazan" is a national archive, created by Decree of 26 November 1948 as a unique and historical archive to gather all the Navy's funds. The Archive saves much of the funds of the different State institutions that have managed the Navy and maritime activities, from the late 18th to the early 20th century, both at the central and peripheral levels. It thus houses the documentation of the Secretary of State and the Office of the Navy after 1783, that of the Ministry of the Decimononic Navy and that of the different ministries that happened to it during the first third of the twentieth century. In addition, it has a part of the documentation generated by the various agencies with jurisdiction in the peninsular maritime departments and in the overseas apostaries (general captain, intendency, marines and assists...). The latest documentation revenue has had a number of sources: the permanent maritime courts sent, following their reform at the end of the 20th century, the maritime assistance files; in addition, the documentation generated by various Navy agencies during the Civil War (Republican Naval Forces, National Naval Forces...) that was gathered by the Navy's Historical Staff Service and is in the process of being classified.Their funds, which have a volume of approximately 12 km, are essential to know the history of these institutions and of the staff at their service. But also, because of the extensive powers that the Navy has had, it is possible to study issues such as the development of shipbuilding, fishing activities and navigation, as well as historical processes such as the independence of the different Spanish overseas possessions. The Archive is located in the Palace of the Marquis of Santa Cruz, built from the 16th century and declared a National Monument in 1931. The building is leased to the Navy for a period of 90 years. The deposits, at the limit of their capacity, as well as other units of the Archive, occupy the rooms that are not fresh, except the research room.
