Collaboration with the Canadian Navy: the "Patiño" heading to Halifax
The "Patiño" combat supply ship has sailed from Ferrol to Halifax, Canada, to deploy two and a half months to support the Royal Canadian Navy. On arrival in Halifax, the "Patiño" will be integrated into a group of Canadian and American ships to carry out the multinational maneuvers CUTLASS FURY, FRONTIER SENTENTIAL and TGEX-616 along the East American Coast. During these exercises, the boarding on board the "Patiño" of RCN members who will be trained by their Spanish counterparts while all kinds of exercises are carried out at sea is authorised. This deployment occurs as a result of a request to the Navy by the Royal Canadian Navy, in view of its lack of supply capacity at sea. This support is based on the principle of solidarity between NATO members, in which one country provides a capacity of which another does not, all of which do not entail additional cost and do not reduce the operational capabilities of our Navy.
The "Patiño," which was handed over to the Navy in 1995, has a strength of 150. It is a combat supply ship with a capacity of approximately 9,000 cubic metres of fuel and 2,000 of ammunition, material and food, which it can supply to a Naval Force at sea. It can also provide health care with its hospital facilities and logistical support in non-war operations such as humanitarian aid and environmental defence.
