1959: From Vigo to Cabo Trafalgar on the "Asunción" dorna of the Nautico de Vigo
In the summer of 1959 the "Asunción," a dorna (a traditional Galician boat of 6.15 meters in length and 2.12 in manga, with a displacement of 500 Kgs, without standing and flag in the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo, was set as the target, of the hand of its crew (Mario Zaera and the sailors of Canido Francisco Piñeiro "Chuco" and José Montenegro Collón), to reach Tarragona, costing the entire Iberian Peninsula. His patron Mario Zaera had proposed to carry out this nautical adventure, to visit the Royal Nautical Club of Tarragona and especially its president Luis Bonet, great friend of the Vigo regatist.
Zaera's experience was deep, with many english to Aguiño... to the "Country of the Dorns," as he called Villagarcía de Arosa. The biggest problems of launching the unique adventure, was that on several occasions the sailors chosen as crew were turned back... they came to ask him up to 50,000 pesetas of the time! for going with him to Tarragona (a small fortune in those years, where a reasonable salary was 1,000 pesetas per month). Mario was about to give up on the project, until his friend Fernando Romero, at the time of the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo, solved the problem by convincing the so-called good sailors of Canido "Chuco" and Montenegro.
But the problems for the intrepid pattern of the Nautico were not finished here, because his wife was very concerned about the risk of the journey to the Mediterranean... this hit was solved with the collaboration of Radio Nacional de España, which with the few means of those years, made available to her to follow up on the navigation... all problems and the subsequent efforts took a long time until at the end of a month of delay on the initial plan, on 21 July 1959 the "Asunción" began her adventure.
After an exit in which many of his friends were on accompanying ships, the dorna was taking off with strength... but a glow in front of the island of Toralla was at the edge of the slope with the initial speed... from there to Baiona where the rain received them... the first miles were a calvary to the point that in the area of Cabo Silleiro the "Asunción" was almost two days fondeada... Then came the ports of Leixóes, Aveiro, Cascais, Sines, Peniche and Lagos... and the Guadiana... with an accident included in the onubense Playa de las Interns and from there very bad to Cadiz where we arrived on August 22 after a month of singladura.
A furious lift was waiting for the Vigues in Cabo Trafalgar: the doubt of entering Conil or Barbate... at the end they faded 200 meters from the beach... but we ended up despite our efforts on it... shortly after in a new attempt came the shipwreck of our dorna, which I certified in the Marina of Barbate... the adventure ended in Cabo Trafalgar, returning the two sailors to Vigo by rail, while Mario made it via Sevilla to Santiago de Compostela by plane.
