Cantabria drives its Port and Facilities Plan with 39.5 million in investment

The advisor of Public Works and Housing of the Government of Cantabria, José María Mazón, together with the general director of Public Works, José Luis Gochicoa, presented the contents of the Plan of Ports and Port Facilities 2014-2021, following the agreement adopted at the meeting of the Governing Council to forward the document to the Parliament of Cantabria for its processing and subsequent approval. As stated in the presentation of the document, the overall budget is EUR 39.5 million. Of this amount, 13.3 million are for the period 2014-2017 and the rest, 26.1 million for the years 2018-2021. According to the counselor, "The plan is adapted to the current economic situation but we believe that they are sufficient and necessary for the moment we are in."The headline of Public Works has determined the objectives of the Plan of Ports and Port Facilities 2014-2021 in "the improvement of the efficiency in the use of resources, both economic and material, as well as to establish well the systems and the means to give a good public service, allowing the realization of new actions and, finally, to preserve the heritage of Cantabria." Mazón has emphasized "the importance of the ports of Cantabria, above their commercial value, and, therefore, from all the regional Government's offices, has been working for their empowerment," he said.

Programme of major actions: aimed at meeting the current demand for nautical-recreational and sports by creating new moorings.The main actions of the Plan are:

  • Extension for sports boats in the port of Suances.
  • New inland marina in San Vicente de la Barquera.

Programme of activities for the modernization and empowerment of existing ports and port facilities: programme which refers to concrete actions for the improvement, empowerment, development, maintenance and conservation of the ports of Cantabria, by modernizing the facilities and services presented. The most prominent are:

Castro Urdiales: reinforcement and conditioning of the northern dam; conditioning and improvement of the outer area of the Eguilior pier and entrance of the Ocharan promenade with the Amesto park.
Laredo: storage ship in the fishing area, flag for nautic-recreational activities and extension of the strip.
Colors: new slender and Fairy of Fishermen and new wineries and warehouses.
Santoña: rehabilitation of the structure in the docks of the fishing dock, improvement of the treatment of the cover and installation of collective protection elements in the fishing strip and catch pants of fishing vessels.
Suances: dredging from the dársena.
Colms: reinforcement of the docks to perform a general dredging of the dársena.
San Vicente de la Barquera: fishing vessel (warehouse and reeds) and workshop ship (for service of the new port).
