The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment has, through a new agreement with Portugal, achieved 360 tonnes of extra quota for the IXa zone to be fish in Spanish waters. With this agreement, the additional quota of IXa boqueron achieved in 2016 is already 1,360 tonnes. With this new exchange, the share of the Gulf of Cadiz amounts to more than 6,400 tons, which equals the quantities set for the Andalusian fencing fleet in the last year 2015. As a result of the agreements reached between the sector concerned, the 360 tonnes obtained are to be distributed between the fishing grounds of Cantábrico Noroeste and Golfo de Cadiz, so that 160 tonnes are allocated to the latter, and 200 tonnes are reserved to the Cantábrico Noroeste due to the possible appearance of the boqueron in the last quarter of the year. In this way, it has been possible to reopen this fishery in the latter fishing area, which had been closed since July for having exhausted its share, which is an impetus for the activity of this fleet segment. This agreement reaffirms the excellent relations between the two countries in the management of fisheries resources and also ensures greater activity in the Gulf of Cadiz and the North-West Cantabric Fisheries.
