The "Navarra" frigate sails to relieve "Queen Sofia" in Operation "Sophia"
The 'Navarra' frigate left Rota Naval Base to relieve the 'Reina Sofía' frigate and join the "Sophia 'Operation to combat illegal human trafficking off the coast of Libya. To this end, it will be integrated into the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR MED) from the 22nd of this month until the end of January next year. The mission of the' Navarra 'frigate during its deployment will be to participate in the fight against the business model mounted by the networks of smuggling and trafficking of human beings in the Mediterranean and to contribute to reducing the possible losses of life at sea that occur as a result of the activities of these networks." EUNAVFOR MED "is an EU-led multinational mission, as decided by the EU Council of 18 May 2015, which contributes to efforts to prevent loss of life at sea and to address the causes of this humanitarian emergency. With the participation in such missions, the Navy contributes to building the security and defence of Spain that goes beyond its borders and begins in countries where instability is generated.
The 'Navarra' is the fifth in a series of six frigates built in Ferrol and delivered to the Navy in 1993. It has a length of 138 meters and more than 4,000 tons of displacement. It is equipped with sensors and weapons that allow it to develop its main tasks as an ocean escort ship.Its strength consists of 200 men and women including the Air Unit of the Aircraft Flotilla and the Marine Infantry Security Operational Team. It has carried out numerous missions, including the most recent, the fight against piracy along the coast of Somalia with Operation "Atalanta" in 2014.
