All prepared to start the 27th Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo. From 4 to 10 September in Mediterranean waters, 53 ships with an average length of about 28 meters (80 to 100 feet)... make up an unparalleled show in which design, technology and navigation skills are their basic principles. The organizational tasks carried out by the Yacht Club Costa Esmeralda, the legendary YCCS, with the collaboration of the International Maxi Association. Rolex has taken over sponsorship since the 1985 edition, it provides its unquestionable quality and its know-how in this kind of unparalleled cutting events.
The most majestic yacht in the fleet, with its almost 50 meters in length and 370 tons of displacement, will be the "Ohana" designed by the malograted Ed Dubois and built by Fitzroy Yates in New Zealand. Its closest rival is the replica of Class J "Heart of Lion," which is 44 meters long. There are also 11 of the so-called "Supermaxi," that is, competition yachts of more than 100 feet in length... that is, more than 30.5 meters. Among them the "Highland Fling" and the "Silleone" (both designs by Argentine German Frers); the "Nikata" work in the pupitre of Judel & Vrolijk that built Baltic Yachts in Finland...
In the "Maxi" division, for "smaller yachts," that is 80 to 100 feet long!, nine participants, to highlight among them Michael Cotter's "Rieichel-Pugh," armed by the Australian Marcus Blackmore, designed by Farr Yacht Design and built in South Africa. In the "Maxi Class 72," the title's defense will be "Bella Minte" design of the German Judel & Vrolijk and armed by Hap Fauth of the United States, which has made a triumphant debut at the King's Cup in Mallorca.
