Digital Nautics Celebrates Gijón to be European Sports City 2016

The Abanca Week will have its meeting in Gijón: the Gijón Optimt Experience, 7-9 October at the Real Club Astur de Regatas

During 2016 Gijón will be the European City of Sport. There are many reasons for this award, but since the Sports Council, work is already being done to be the best European sport city developing a project that is based on physical activity as an essential element in the integral development of people and the universalization of sports practice. Gijón is a city where sport is practiced, organized and lived intensively, the main reason why we have received this award. That is why it is fair that, throughout this year, we value all the activities and events organized both by the Municipal Sports Patronate and by other sports entities (clubs, federations..) always within a framework of continuous collaboration. This year, Gijón will enjoy more than 120 sports events, including the Abanca Week among other nautical tests, covering a wide variety of disciplines and aspects of sport:

Popular tests:: like the Farinato Race, which was held on Sunday, January 31, with almost 2,000 participants, the Spanish Championship of Master Swimming, also in January, with about 1,400 athletes represented in 150 different clubs or the sixth edition of the Media Marathon Gijón with 2,500 places to take place on April 30.

High competition tests:like the Spanish Championship of Absolute Athletics to be held in the Las Mesas Sports Complex in July and the traditional CSIO to be held in August and to be incorporated this year the Gijón European City of Sport Prize.

In the following link you can download the provisional event calendar, it is a living project that will surely experience changes as well as new sports dates: It would have been impossible to reach this prize if the city's sports activity was limited to the organization and support of major events. The Municipal Sports Patronate also wants to make a proposal for and for the citizens from the twelve sides to have physical activity and Sport for All according to the European Charter for Sport:
