The "Rats on Fire" of Catalan shipowner Rafael Carbonell (Ship of the Year) and the Canarian regatist Rayco Tabares (Pattern of the Year) have been proclaimed at the National Vela Terras Gauda Awards, which will be delivered as usual in the last editions in the Prince of Asturias Trophy in the first week of September, at the Mount Real Club of Yates in Baiona.
In the opinion of the Jury of the Awards, the "Rats on Fire" is one of the most prominent of the cruise sailing, having won seven Count of Godó Trophy and four King's Copas, as well as several Spanish and world championships. At the head of this Swan 45 of the Arenys de Mar Nautical Club is Rafael Carbonell, a Catalan shipowner who has been in love with the sea for more than half of his life. He says he started late to sail, but he knew how to surround the best and be able to learn everything they were teaching him.
A prominent member of that crew is the canary Rayco Tabares, who will receive the National Terra Guda Sailing Award Best Pattern. The lanzaroteño wrote in 2016 his name in the history of the sailing in Spain, having achieved, at just 32 years old, his third J80 World Championship, a milestone that no one had achieved so far.
