Salvamento Marítimo provided assistance to a total of 5,691 people in the first semester
Salvamento Marítimo, under the Ministry of Development, coordinated the rescue, assistance or search of 5,691 people (an average of 31 per day) in the 2,117 maritime performances (11.6 per day) held throughout Spain during the first half of the year. This data represents a 5% increase over the first half of 2015 in the number of people involved in the proceedings.
The majority of the activity in the first half of 2016 was related to the saving of lives at sea, in particular 1,632 actions, 192 other interventions aimed at ensuring maritime safety and 159 related to the protection of the marine environment. The total number of vessels involved was 1,407, of which 697 (more than 49 per cent), 253 and 194 merchant vessels were involved. The remaining 263 cases were related to other types of vessels or floating devices.
In addition, the total number of vessels controlled by the 20 Maritime Rescue centres has been 155,523, of which 74,004 are ships identified in their way through the Traffic Separation Devices of Finisterre, Tarifa and Cape Gata and the Eastern and Western Canary Islands. The other 81,519 ships were controlled at the entrances / exits of the Spanish ports.
