The Portuguese boat Xekmatt, of the Lisbon Naval Association, this afternoon became the winner of the second stage and virtual winner of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, the ocean race held this July in Atlantic waters under the organization of Mount Real Club de Yates and the Angra Iate Clube. The crew of the cascalense José Carlos Prista, shipowner and master of the ship during the first stage, completed two fantastic regatas of return between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo. In the first phase, the glues had to be conformed to the second place that left them the Saint Maxime of Miguel Lago, implacable throughout the course, but in this second stage, they were finally able to feel.

This afternoon, at eight and six minutes, after 148 hours of navigation, the Xekmatt crew rigged in Baiona after winning the last stage in real time and making the virtual victory of the first edition of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. During the 865 miles back to Baiona, the ship sailed, according to the tracking system, at an average speed of 6.3 knots, reaching peaks of 9.2 per moment. On board the ship, in the two stages, a team of family and friends, all professionals of the sailing world, with more than ten years of experience in nautical competitions. Hugo Prista, 37 years old, at the helm; the trimmer of major Joao Prista; the bow André Oliveira; Joao Henriques, piano manager and André Martins, Filipe Alves, Carlos Assunçao and Joao Guerra completing a luxury crew. In front of them all, to the wheel in the first stage and from the ground in the second, the shipowner and patron, José Carlos Prista, 68 years old, with an average of 30 races per year and a long curriculum of victories in large trophies such as the Prince of Asturias, the Atlantic Cup of Azores and several Portuguese cruise championships, among others.

The exit in Azores towards Baiona

The second stage of the Angra Atlantic Race, the ocean race organized by the Mount Real Club of Yates and the Angra Iate Clube, with the collaboration of various Azorian institutions and the Pontevedra Dependation, began this afternoon with some delay as scheduled. The low wind that was recorded at the time set for the departure was the one that forced to postpone for a little more than half an hour the beginning of a test in which the six participating ships must complete the 865 miles that separate the Azorian town of Angra do Heroismo from the Galician coast.

Con un poco de retraso se inició la Angra-Baiona, o sea el segundo acto. El marco increíblemente bello, digo de una película del 007.

With a little delay the Angra-Baiona was started, that is the second act. The very beautiful frame, I say of a 007 film.

The first 200 miles will certainly be the most complex for a fleet that will have to look, in an area characterized by little wind, for the best possible conditions to achieve the necessary momentum to allow them to separate from the rest of the ships. Once they get it, it will all depend on the good work of the crews, both in choosing direction and in performing the maneuvers. It will also influence, at least on some vessels, their ability to adapt to changes, as there have been changes in some equipment. The Saint Maxime of Mount Real Club of Yates, who succeeded in the first stage with Miguel Lago on the wheel, is now patrolling by Gerardo Alonso. The Portuguese Xekmatt of the Lisbon Naval Association, in which José Carlos Prista left the command in the hands of Hugo Prista, is also a leader.

Pablo Toja replaces Yann Lascan at the Free Spirit of the Royal Maritime Club of Abra; and Antonio Tea to Unai Basurko on board the Pakea Cadenote, who now also sails for the Maritime Club of Canido. They maintain the same pattern the Atlantis of the Bouzas Maritime Liceo, which is still led by Ivan Prieto; and the Cleopatra of the Nautical Association of Recreio, with José Rafael Ribeiro to the controls. The evolution of the Angra Atlantic Race Baiona can be followed minute by minute via the Internet thanks to a tracking system that will show the data of each ship, the length and latitude to which they are located and the speed and direction to which they sail. The competition will end on July 23 in Baiona with the award of the winners, at a ceremony to be held at 9: 00 p.m. at the Monte Real Club de Yates.

First stage winners

The first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo, was won by the Saint Maxime of Mount Real Club of Yates, patronized by Miguel Lago, who completed the test in just 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes. The second position was for his most direct rival throughout the competition, the Xekmatt of José Carlos Prista, of the Lisbon Naval Association. The bronze was taken by the Cleopatra of the Nautical Association of Recreio; and the Free Spirit and Atlantis, the Royal Maritime Club of Abra and the Maritime Licensing of Bouzas, completed the classification. The rest of the ships that left Baiona for Azores were forced to leave the race for different reasons, mostly related to technical problems on the ships.
