The frigate "Méndez Núñez" in the anti-submarine exercises "Dynamic Mongolose"
The 'Méndez Nuñez' frigate, a command ship of NATO Permanent Naval Group No. 1 (SNMG-1), completed yesterday its participation in the "DYNAMIC MONGOOSE" exercise developed in the Norwegian Sea between 20 and 30 June. The "DYNAMIC MONGOOSE" exercise is an advanced anti-submarine war training in which the participating units seek to improve the capacities associated with this type of threat. In addition, this exercise serves to increase interoperability between ships from different marine areas by improving response capacity in crisis and maritime safety scenarios.
The units involved in the training have been 3 submarines, 9 surface vessels and 4 NATO maritime patrol aircraft. The participating nations were Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and the United States. The exercise is organized and directed by the Commander of the NATO Submarine Command (COMSUBNATO) under the supervision of the Allied Maritime Command Headquarters (MARCOM).
The Permanent Naval Group of NATO No. 1
Under the command of the Spanish Rear Admiral José Enrique Delgado Roig, the Permanent Naval Group of NATO No. 1 (SNMG-1) is composed of the English ship 'Iron Duke' and the Spanish frigate 'Méndez Núñez'. This is one of the permanent naval groups of NATO's integrated multinational forces, which project a constant and visible presence of the Alliance's solidarity in maritime areas of interest. The Navy participates in these groups with frigates and combat supply ships, providing the experience and knowledge of our endowments. These permanent groups serve as the naval spear of the Atlantic Alliance in order to provide an almost immediate naval presence in any part of the world where an armed conflict may arise.
The frigate 'Mendez Núñez'
With a number of F-104, it is the fourth frigate of the "Alvaro de Bazan" class. Its AEGIS combat system, coupled with the SPY-1D multifunction radar, provides a great capacity for air warfare. The ship's commander is frigate captain Francisco José Asensi Pérez. For this deployment, it also has a SH60B helicopter from the Tenth Air Squad on board and a Navy Infantry Security (EOS) operational team, which strengthens its capabilities.
