The Ocean Race Etapa5: Lastormes propitiate high speeds towards Sicily

Four ships within a 10-mile radius near the Italian beacon
It has been 24 hours of fun for the seven international crews of The Ocean Race Europe 2025. The teams are on the third day of the fifth and final stage of the race, a journey of 1,600 nautical miles from Genoa, Italy, to the Bay of Boka in Montenegro where they have met with strong winds and stormy conditions during the night.
After two days of sailing mostly with little wind and slow advance of the fleet, the first four teams - Paprec Arkéa (FRA), Biotherm (FRA), Allagrande Mapei (ITA) and Team Malizia (GER) - were the first to meet a low-pressure system with winds of more than 30 knots that launched them at full speed in the bearing direction, to the limit - and sometimes beyond - of control... on board the Paprec Arkéa, the pattern Yoann Richomme (FRA), he woke up in a little bit after a fresh storm and found a little bit of a fresh in the side of a new wind, after a little bit of a fresh wind.
At 14: 30 today, as leaders reduced speed in slower winds in the approach to a virtual waypoint to the north-west of Sicily, the tracker showed Paprec Arkéa head with about three nautical miles of advantage over the other three, which sailed very much more in the north. Team Holcim - PRB followed fifth to 120 miles, with Canada Ocean Racing and Team AMALA respectively 260 and 300 miles from the leader. After passing the waypoint, the group will surround the western and southern coast of Sicily throughout the day and night before heading east to Greece.

2025-09-09: The Ocean Race Etapa5: Paprec Arkéa leads the IMOCA fleet that sails south

The point teams are back on their way to Boka Bay.
The Paprec Arkéa team of Yoann Richomme added two points by first passing through the sharp door of Stage 5, ahead of Allagrande Mapei Racing... with the fresh Mediterranean breezes that arrived during the night have accelerated the progress of the fleet of The Ocean Race Europe to the south on the second day of the fifth stage of the European tour.
The seven international crews had slowly advanced with very loose winds since they left Genoa (Italy) on Sunday afternoon, on the 1,600 nautical miles to Boka Bay in Montenegro, after costing for Nice and Saint- Tropez (France) at night.
However, the arrival of a north-west wind of 8 to 10 knots around 02: 30 CEST this morning finally gave the leaders - Paprec Arkéa of Yoann Richomme, Biotherm (FRA) of Paul Meilhat, leader of the general, Team Malizia (GER) of Boris Herrmann and Allagrande Mapei Racing (ITA) of Ambrogio Beccaria - the opportunity to set the way south for the first time.
Sailing in the stern with the increasing breeze, reaching speeds of up to 32 knots per moment, this quartet quickly progressed towards the punctuable door of Stage 5, at the height of Santo Stefano (Sardinia). At 13: 30 CEST today, only six miles separated the first four - Paprec Arkéa, Mapei, Biotherm, Malizia - when they sailed west of Menorca, with Holcim 12 miles behind in fifth position. Canada Ocean Racing was sixth, 82 miles from the leader, and Team AMAALA seventh, 61 miles back. In the pursuit, Team Holcim-PRB's patron, Kuiper, was not happy to go to the trailer, but with up to six more days of race ahead, she said she and her crew will continue to fight for a return to the fight.

2025-09-08: The Ocean Race Etapa5: The fleet advances under a blood moon eclipse

The international fleet of the seven ships competing in The Ocean Race Europe 2025 slowly advanced during the night in ultra-clear Mediterranean winds along the Italian and French coasts, on their first night at sea in the fifth and final stage of the race, from Genoa to Boka Bay in Montenegro.
The mating conditions have prevailed since yesterday afternoon, when the seven IMOCA crews lined up in closed formation for the start of the 1,600 nautical miles route, which will lead to the fleet on the western side of Corsica and Sardinia, south of Sicily, before heading towards a virtual waypoint near Greece and turn north to enter the Adriatic towards Boka Bay.
With the exception of a short period around 21: 00 CEST, when that Earth breeze accelerated the fleet to over 10 knots for a moment, progress has been painfully slow for all teams. Each crew won and lost ground at different times, alternating between their Code Zero bow sails and the stick top spinnakers as they came in and out of more and less wind areas
2025-09-07: The Ocean Race Etapa5: Biotherm first leaves Genoa

Light winds made the fleet of The Ocean Race Europe search for speed at the exit of Stage 5
The seven international teams that compete in The Ocean Race Europe 2025 have left Genoa in the fifth and final stage of the race: a complicated 1,600 nautical miles across the Mediterranean and towards the Adriatic towards Boka Bay in Montenegro.
Despite having an estimated eight days of navigation ahead of it before arriving at Boka Bay, as soon as the exit cannon rang at three o'clock in the afternoon, the crews immediately faced a crucial decision: if the first round of wind would be in or near the coast. Before leaving the pants this morning, several patterns recognized that they were still valuing their options on this first key choice.
After Biotherm, four teams - Paprec Arkéa, Team Holcim- PRB, Allagrande Mapei Racing and Team Malizi - are in the podium. Stage 5 began with light winds that barely reached five knots, which led the fleet to cross the line at speeds of three to four knots. The winner of stage 4, Ambrogio Beccaria of Allagrande Mapei Racing, were placed in the head after the exit, leading the fleet over quiet waters... so is the provisional classification, The Ocean Race Europe:
1 - BIOTHERM - 41 sts
2 - PAPREC ARKÉA - 29 sts
3 - TEAM HOLCIM PRB - 27.3 sts
4 - ALLAGRANDE MAPEI RACIG - 19 sts
5 - TEAM MALIZIA - 18 sts
6 - CANADA OCEAN RACIG - BE WATER POSITIVE - 13 sts
7 - TEAM AMAALA - 7 sts

2025-09-06: The Ocean Race Etapa5: the final course for Montenegro is a pure show

Tomorrow Sunday, the seven crews of The Ocean Race Europe will align for the ultimate challenge: a 2,000-mile tour from Genoa, Italy, to Boka Bay in Montenegro
The route promises to be as demanding as it is spectacular, with the expected arrival in Montenegro on Monday, September 15. After five stages full of action and unexpected turns, the great ending promises even more emotion. The tour, revealed on Friday morning, is spectacular. The fleet will leave Genoa on Sunday at 15: 00 and sail south, around Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily, before heading south of Greece and turning north to enter the Adriatic Sea. To add even more interest, the Race Control team has incorporated a series of waypoints along the way.
Among the challenges that will be found on the route, the crews will sail about four headlights and four islands around Sicily, including Ustica, Pantelaria and Gozo. They must also pass through an 11-mile door south-east of Sicily, which could compress the fleet. From there, they will set out for a new waypoint in front of Greece before the last push to the Adriatic to enter Boka Bay.

Several teams also make crew changes for the last stage. Holcim-PRB recovers Patron Rosalin Kuiper, and Will Harris returns to Team Malizia, while Biotherm incorporates the young Spanish talent Carlos Menara, second in the Mini Transat 2023 (Photo Jean Louis Carli)
In Paprec Arkéa, Levisse himself will embark on his first stage, as will Hugo Feydit in Allagrande Mapei Racing. Team Amaala adds to the Swiss regatists Jessica Berthoud and Yann Burkhalter with Alan Roura and Conrad Colman. With Allagrande Mapei Racing (19 sts) and Team Malizia (18 sts) separated by one point in the fight for the fourth position, and Canada Ocean Racing (13 sts) playing the sixth to Team Amaala (7 sts), the entire fleet still has something at stake. Fireworks are expected until the arrival at Boka Bay.
