King of Classics Cup: Spartan, Amorita, Mariska, Argos, Barlovento- Senda Azul oros

The competition finally consisted of three tests, following the cancellation of the first day due to lack of wind, and brought together a fleet of 49 vessels from 11 countries, with units ranging from the mid-19th to the end of the 20th century (Photo Nico Martínez)
The Spartan (1913), in the Crab Epoch; the Amorita (1935), in the Bermuda Epoch; the Argos (1964), in Classics; the Mariska (1908), in Big Boats; and the Barlovento-Senda Azul (1975), in the Spirit of Tradition, are the winners of the 21st Cup of King Repsol of the Epoch, held in the waters of Menorca under the organization of the Mahon Maritime Club.
In Epoco Craja, the Spartan (1913) won its fifth title in the Repsol King's Cup, following those obtained in 2016, 2022, 2023 and 2024. Designed by Nathanael Herreshoff within the NY60 series, it was clearly imposed thanks to its larger length and vile surface, without Rowdy (1916) or Chinook (1916).
In the Bermudian era (pre-1950 ships with triangular gear), the triumph was for the Amorita (1935), a sloop designed by Nicholas S. Potter and patronized by Claudio Meali. It was her first victory in the Repsol King's Cup, relegating her second place to the Santana (1930), by Wendy Schmidt, who today could only be fourth. The third place of the general was for the Baruna (1938), patronized by Tony Morse, who was awarded the last sleeve.
The history in the class of classical ships (from 1950 to 1975) was practically written in advance. It has been seven editions that no ship has managed to restrain the Argos (1964), a Holman & Pye of the New York shipowner Barbara Trilling. Winner since 2018, it seemed that on this occasion his superiority could be threatened, but neither the Albacore (1966) of Luis Figueiredo, nor the Star Shapire of London (1957) of Jakob Glatz.
The Big Boats competition was inevitably derailed after the withdrawal of the Tuiga and Lady Anne after the second day. The latter left as a great favorite, after his victory last year. The Mariska (1908), who trusted to measure himself with his twins, was left alone, since the Cariad (1896), his only rival in liza.
The most intense struggle was in the Spirit of Tradition, where the Barlovento-Senda Azul (1975), of Domingo de Torres, was awarded the triumph in the last manga and recovered the lead he lost after a fourth place in yesterday's day. The Fligth of Durgan (2007), by Stuart & Grylls, was second, followed by Christian Oldendorff's Happy Forever (2008).

2025-08-29: Cup of the King of Classics: Mariska, Spartan, Amorita and Argos are postulated oars

The fleet was able to complete a day without incident after the Thursday storm. Three ships tied to points will play tomorrow victory in the class Spirit of Tradition (Photo Nico Martínez)
After yesterday's storm, which left the Tuiga (1909) and Lady Anne (1912) out of a race, two of the most pedigree ships of the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoco, the Menorcan waters returned to calm. Although the remains of the north wind remained in the form of a deep sea, the day sunrise and with the atmosphere devoid of the humidity that in the previous two days had generated that mixture of weak breezes and the possibility of local chucbats so difficult to manage by the organization. The wind was not all that was expected, but it was enough for the good development of a coastal race in demand of the Air Island and with arrival inside the Mahonese Rada. The eight knots of the south-west that marked the anemometer at the time of departure remained unchanged during most of the route.
The Spartan (1913), designed by Nathanael Herreshoff from the specifications of the NY60 formula, was the first to look at its colossal crab gear by the mouth of the port of Mahon after the 21.5 nautical miles of the tour in three hours and fifteen minutes. The boat patrolled by Aladin Montel sailed in the vanguard of the fleet and with clean wind in the two sleeves contested until today and is already safe to win the XXI Cup of the King Repsol of Epoque in the class Epoo Craja (ships before 1950 with trapezoidal gear). The crew of the Rowdy (1916), the NY 40 of the shipowner Dona Dyer, also has reason to be very satisfied. The two races of this edition, in the absence of tomorrow's test, have shown that, after a thorough development this past winter at its base of the Royal Nautical Club of Palma, it sails with a certain slack at the bow of its twin, the Chinook (1916), with which it maintains a healthy rivalry.
The Amorita is a beautiful design by Nicholas S. Potter, which was launched in 1937 and revives his best years by his current shipowner, Claudio Meali. As with the Spartan, his victory is practically assured by two very clear victories in the Epoo Bermudian class (ships prior to 1950 with triangular gear). Today he took almost four minutes in time to compensate his maximum rival, the Santana (1935), one of the great attractions of this Repsol King's Cup in view of his convulsive history, his impeccable restoration and, above all, the fact that he belonged to Humphrey Bogart, who came to consider it his personal "sanctuary." The Sonny, of 1935, designed by Sparkman & Stephens and armed by businessman Harold Goddijn, occupies the third position of the general.
Barbara Trilling and his Argos crew (1964) set the bow to which he will be, almost certainly, his eighth victory in the Repsol King's Cup. Neither the Mowgly (1965), second in general, nor the Albacore (1966), third, managed to overcome one of the most laureate teams in the race organized by the Mahono Maritime Club. The leading boat, which sails with the New York Yacht Club's grympola, is not the fastest in the fleet of Classics (ships between 1950 and 1975), but the one that best defends its rating. Today he invested four hours and twenty-six minutes in completing the tour, compared to the three hours and forty-seven minutes of Albacore, but ended up imposing for a minute after the time correction.
In the Spirit of tradition there was a change of leader. The Flight of Durgan, by Stuart / Grylls, fourth in the inaugural race, emerged today to the first square, relegating to the Barlovento-Senda Azul, the shipowner Domingo Torres, and to the Happy Forever of Christian Oldendorff, to the second and third square, respectively. The three ships are tied to five points and tomorrow will play the victory in their class to a card. The provisional order decides, for the moment, the result of the last manga, although, for practical purposes, it could be said that the three are leaders waiting for the decisive battle.
In Big Boats, after the defaults of Tuiga and Lady Anne, the Mariska (1908) had no rival in the Cariad (1896), a boat that, despite its largest length, does not meet the conditions for planting a face to a FI15 designed exclusively for the competition.

2025-08-28: Cup of the King of Classics: winds of more than 50 knots in the second act

A 53rd-kt wind-blower starring the second day of the Repsol King's Cup
The second day of the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoco offered a beautiful and dramatic contrast. The fleet, eager to compete after the suspension of the previous day, faced a short but intense journey with exit and arrival in the natural port of Maó, one of the most spectacular scenarios in the Mediterranean. Under a covered and heavy sky, the 49 classic and old boats deployed their candles towards the mouth of the rada, offering a picture rarely seen in the two decades of the race's history.
But that tense, electricity-loaded calm wasn't a simple backdrop. When part of the fleet had already crossed the line of arrival and was safe in its mooring, a chubasco violently discharged in the vicinity of Punta Prima. The torrential rain and the wind showers surprised the Big Boats in the middle of the line, beating them hard. The larger ships had taken the exit last and their route included leaving the Air Island by starboard, so they were out of port protection when the storm reached its greatest intensity.
The FI15 Tuiga (1909), a flagship of the Yacht Club of Monaco, suffered the shedding of its trapezoidal gear, while the Lady Anne (1912), of the same kind, broke the bottle and the starboard cruise. The Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoco is finished for both boats. The positive news is that the incidents were settled without personal damage. In the face of this situation, the Committee of Regates chose to suspend the competition of the Big Boats and apply a repair to the ships of the remaining classes that had not crossed the line of arrival and were affected by the entrance of the front.
The Mariska (1908) and the Cariad (1896), the other two Big Boats in liza, were practically free of the chubacco, although it also reached them in full. Jean-Michel Rouve, the crew leader of the Cariad, explained that the team was aware that they might be able to head the storm: "We knew that the part was complicated because we had the official warning, but the wind force has been higher than expected," said Rouve, who added: "We have found a peak of 53 knots reaching Air Island. We have had quite a hard time, which we have overcome because we have a crew that listens and knows how to stay calm."
On the purely sporting side, the Spartan (1913) was imposed in the category Epoco Craja (ships prior to 1950 with trapezoidal gear). He was followed by the Rowdy (1916) of the shipowner Dona Dyer, who succeeded in beating his twin Chinook (1916) in the particular duel of the NY40 designed by Herreshoff. Among the Bermuda Epoch (prior to 1950 with triangular gear) the Amorita (1937), by Claudio Mealli, who crossed the goal ahead of Santana (1936), a ship that belonged to actor Humphrey Bogart and that patrons Wendy Smith, and the Baruna (1938), by Tony Morse.
In Classics, the triumph was for the Argos (1964), by Barbara Trilling, one of the most laureate ships in the history of the King Repsol Cup, which was imposed on the Mowgly (1965), by Patrick Harris, and the Clarionet (1966), armed by Andrey Harvey. For his part, in the Spirit of Tradition he dominated the Barlovent (1975), with Pachi Rivero to the cane, who led ahead of the Celeste di Mare (1971), patroned by Felix Comas, and the Happy Forever (2008), by Christian Oldendorff.

2025-08-27 The lack of wind fuses the first act of a great Cup of the King of Classics

The race of the Club Marítimo de Mahón brings together half a hundred classic and old boats in one of its most popular editions of recent years
The twenty-first edition of the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoco, had an undesired start due to the lack of wind, which did not allow the operation of the results of this great event that was officially presented at the Club Marítimo de Mahón, which will return the island of Menorca to the epicenter of the international classic candle.
The race, fully consolidated in the calendar of great vintage sailing competitions, brings together from today until August 30 49 historical and classic jewel ships from 11 countries, with a four-day programme of competition at sea and an intense social agenda on land.
The race will bring together true legends of the sea that represent different stages of the history of the candle. Among the classes present are the Big Boats (4 ships more than 23 meters long), the Crab Epoch (7 ships launched before 1949 with trapezoidal gear), the Bermuda Epoch (12 ships launched before 1949 with Bermudian gear), the Classics (13 units built before 1975 in wood or metal) and the Spirit of Tradition category (13 ships that, despite incorporating modern techniques, maintain the classic design).
International participation is another major attraction of this edition. The shipowners and crews of Germany, Monaco, the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Portugal, France and Spain will be represented.
