Volunteers receive indications prior to waste removal at the Altea Nautical Club. More than half a hundred volunteers have participated this year in the cleaning of the seabed and coves organized by the Nautical Club of Altea. On this occasion the area of action has been the fossil dune of Serra Gelada, one of the most interesting parts at the geological and botanical level of the natural park and in which no cleaning work was carried out for a long time. The volunteers were divided into two teams: one of land, which has been collecting waste from the coves and one of water, made up of divers from the company Ocelado Diving, who have taken away the waste accumulated at the bottom of the sea. In total, five bags of waste were collected, mainly plastic, cork and wood. This result shows that the waters of Altea Bay are maintained in an optimal state of cleaning. It highlights the fact that no highly polluting elements such as batteries and plumbing have been found, something that has happened in previous editions. In parallel with the collaboration of the company Rutes de mar, children have enjoyed a day of snorkeling in which they have been able to appreciate the meadows of posidonia. Prior to the departure, the little ones have had an explanatory talk about the importance of this species and its peculiarities. The cleaning of the seabed and coves put the point and end to the XVI Environmental Days organized by the Nautical Club of Altea that are carried out each year in order to raise awareness of the importance of keeping the bay of Altea clean. Departure from Kayaks and conferences The days started with awareness-raising activities. They found a kayaks exit to the mouth of the Algar River. There the historian Juan Vicente Martí, offered a talk about the importance of the Algar River for the natural parks of Sierra Gelada and Peñón de Ifach and the transcendence that this river has had throughout history to supply the ships that were sailing the Mediterranean. The Nautical Club of Altea also hosted a cycle of conferences in which they participated: the Club's environmental vocal, Patrick Sanden, with a talk on the impact of pollution on marine fauna; the technical of the Institute of Litoral Ecology, Joaquín Martínez, with a presentation on the importance of the posidonia meadows and the threats they are subjected to; and the botanist Joan Piera, who spoke about flora in the natural park of Serra Gelada. The conference cycle was attended by the Council of the Environment and Fisheries of the municipality of Altea, Beatriu Nomdedeu. As before these days and coinciding with the last day of work of the fishing fleet. The Nautical Club of Altea, together with the Altea Fishermen's Brotherhood, held a day of awareness with the fishermen that consisted of taking out the garbage from the bottom of the sea to auction and fixing a symbolic price whose collection went to the participating ships. The aim was to value the work of collecting waste that is hooked into the networks, recycle them and not return them to the sea. For XVI years the Nautical Club of Altea has organized the Environmental Days to educate the neighbors and users of Altea Bay about good environmental practices and thus maintain a cleaner environment and a better image of Altea Bay.
