Gandara rules in the Winter League J80, Spain in Sidney with no margin of error
Javier Gandara orders in Baiona waters, with his J80 Okofen
Okofen became Baiona this afternoon as the first leader of the Winter League of the J80 class after imposing himself on the inaugural day of the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates.
Complicated the opening of the League for the regatta committee, which had to postpone for more than two hours the beginning of the tests because the weather conditions were not conducive... finally the wind made good act of presence and allowed to inaugurate the Winter League.
Behind the Okofen, in second position, was the Waikiki of Andrés Gómez; and the crew of the Namasté, patronized by Luis de Mira, completed the provisional podium in third position. The top 5 is closed by the Puma- Spaco Group of Santi Estévez, in the fourth place; and the Due of Rafael Blanco in the fifth.
LIGA BAITRA OF INVIERN J80 - CLASSIFICATION
The Winter League Baitra J80 returns to Baiona on February 22 to fight the second of the five planned tests.
Spain will have to press this Sunday to fight for the final in Sydney
The Spaniards began the day with a sensational second place, exceeding Australia in the last buoy, but could not repeat performance in the next races. After the first day of the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix, ours are six points away from the podium, in sixth position.
Diego Botín and company will have to embroiard it tomorrow to be able to repeat the final in this 2025 season of the Rolex SailGP Championship.
The Gallos, which closed the past ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix, 124; Auckland offering a fantastic duel against the Australians, began the first day of racing in Sydney with a sensational second place, getting over Tom Slingsby and his almost in the last buoy. It was quite a statement of intent.
France and New Zealand were two of the top countries of the day, but for very different reasons. The French, with Quentin Delapierre at the wheel, confirmed that they were not forgotten about flying over the water, and finished the day in third place and with two podiums. The black foils, on the other hand, suffered a breakdown in their F50 after puncture in one of the fleet races, and failed to complete Race Day 1. We'll see if they can compete tomorrow. The unsure one is the United States, which yesterday broke part of its wing before the start of the training and was unable to take the exit today.
