Javier Visiers Rodríguez, an emblematic figure in the world of the naval architecture and the Spanish competition candle (Tabacalera Archive)

The Spanish candle says goodbye to one of the great names of its history. Javier Visiers Rodríguez, born in Madrid in 1942, has been an emblematic figure in the world of naval architecture and the Spanish competition candle. His career is distinguished by a prolific activity as an international designer, promoter, builder and regatist.

Visiers began navigation from young people, exploring from light sailing units to cruises in large races such as the Giraglia, Parmelia or Caribbean Race.

His passion for high sail led him to design and build the maxi "Siesta" that would give life to his dream of participating in the world's return, then Withbread Round The World Race, with the saga "Fortuna." He continued to the first incursion of the Spanish Liquor 43 of Joaquín Coello with the Extra Lights Fortune in the 1985-86 edition, continued with the second Extra Lights Fortune, nicknamed flying Fortuna by achieving the speed record in 24 hours with 405 miles and, turned into a ketch, took part in the next edition 1993-94. From this impressive adventure we can still find large sailing names like Joan Vila, Guillermo Altadill or Iñaki Castañer among others. Javier de la Gandara, who participated in several of his projects, was one of the greatest bets of the Madrileño, which ended as almost always in total success... when he shared the role of the Fortuna with another of the great patterns of all time: Jan Santana.

His love for sailing and design also led him to sign serial boats that have left a great mark on our fleet, being great better sealers of the moment that our waters are still flowing: the famous Fortuna 9 and Fortuna 12.

One of Javier's great virtues was his generosity and friendship. Among many other competitions he created the Open of Spain that still from time to time the Monte Real Club of Yates of Baiona is set up with prestigious international rods. Javier has written many pages in the history of the Spanish candle... and many including the one who writes to them, keep it in their heart. Rest in peace, friend Javier; you have been above all a good man and we will never forget you.
