Following the last observation race, the Princess Sofia Trophy, the Olympic Preparation Committee has announced the names of the athletes selected to represent Spain at the 2024 Olympic Games in the classified classes that had not yet completed their selection process: Ana Moncada in ILCA 6, Pilar Lamadrid in iQFOiL Women and Joaquin Blanco in ILCA 7.
This proposal of the Olympic Preparation Committee has already been submitted to the RFEV Board of Directors and, once approved, will be transferred to the Spanish Olympic Committee for final ratification.
iQFOiL Female Pilar Lamadrid
In the selection of the sevillanaPilar Lamadridas representative ofiQFOiL Femalethe Olympic Preparation Committee concludes that it is the best national regatist in the class, both for its fifth place in the World Championship and for its position on the other Spanish in the Princess Sofia Trophy.
ILCA 6.- Ana Moncada
In the choice of the AndalusianAna Moncadaas representative ofILCA 6the Olympic Preparation Committee has both valued its role in the classification of the class for the Games in the World Cup last January, and the results obtained by the Malaysian regatist during the selection period.
ILCA 7.- Joaquín Blanco
The appointment of the canary sportsmanJoaquín BlancoinILCA 7 It is endorsed as the only Spanish representative who has managed to be among the top 10 of a world during the entire Olympic campaign with an eighth place. For the Olympic Preparation Committee it is very important to note that the level of Joaquín Blanco and Joel Rodríguez has been very similar throughout the campaign, so the two observed races established have been analysed in detail. In the 2024 world, the level shown by all Spanish regatists was much lower than usual in other international events, so this race has not been taken into account in this decision. In the second observation race the results have been more similar to the level shown in previous events, with Joaquín Blanco being the 15th of the general and 13th country and Joel Rodríguez 18th and 15th country.
Following this proposal from the Olympic Preparation Committee, the nine classes that have obtained their country classification for the Paris 2024 are assigned to the athletes who will make up the Spanish Olympic sailing team, leaving pending the classification of the Formula Kite Male. This class has a last chance to qualify for Hyéres Week that will be held between 21 and 27 April. With nine classes classified for the Olympic Games, Spain is among the main international sailing powers, and the team will look at Hyères to repeat the full class achieved in Tokyo 2020.
