The ILCA 6 World Championship held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, has maintained the excitement until the last moment and closes in the best possible way for the Spanish team. National representatives return home with the ninth country square for Paris 2024.
As planned, the Medal Race was preceded by a last fleet race that was to clear the unknowns of the country squares obtained in this championship. The Spanish team, represented in the group Oro by Ana Moncada, Cristina Pujol and Isabel Hernández, took the exit in the fourth place of the ranking of nations and crossed the line of arrival confirming the square.
As Xisco Gil, director of Olympic preparation, says, "adding the ninth country square for Spain is a new milestone of the Spanish candle that places us as the main international power, being the European country with the highest number of classes classified so far. We outnumber Britain, Italy and the Netherlands, which currently have eight places and approach the goal of being in Paris 2024 with representation in the ten Olympic classes."
Six months from the Olympic Games only France, as host, has representation in the ten Olympic sailing classes. It is followed by nine seats by three Asian countries, Australia, China and New Zealand, and Spain, which rise as the first European power.
The Danish Anne- Marie Rindom, a retainer of Olympic gold, revalued her world title, accompanied on the podium by American Charlotte Rose and Belgian Emma Plasschaert. Ana Moncada is the first Spanish to be ranked at 34, followed by Cristina Pujol, 46, and Isabel Hernández, 50. In the Silver group, the Torreviejense Roca Ascension closes its participation in position 21.
The next international citations of the Spanish Olympic sailing team will be the ILCA 7 World Championship to be held in Adelaide, Australia, from January 26 to 31, and the iQFOiL World Cup to be held in Lanzarote from January 29 to February 3.
