Transmed is the first national shipping company and one of the first in Europe to address in a comprehensive way the challenges of shipping these vehicles, ensuring the safety of the cargo, the ship and the people involved

Transmed, the Spanish shipping company of the Grimaldi Group, the world leader in the shipping of ro-ro, has implemented, this 2023, strict safety protocols for the boarding and transport of electric vehicles. This measure is part of the company's environmental policy, which supports the transition to eco-efficient transport.

Thus, Transmed is positioned as the first national shipping company and one of the first in Europe to comprehensively address the challenges of the maritime transport of electric vehicles, ensuring the safety of the cargo, the ship and the people involved.

The director of Institutional Relations of Trasmed, Miguel Pardo, has highlighted the commitment of the shipping company to adapting to the demands of the market for electric vehicles and has emphasized that Trasmed... does not provide for the prohibition of the transport of electric vehicles on any of its ships.

The increasing demand for electric vehicles on the market has revealed the identification of new risks associated with the transport of electric vehicles in the maritime sector. This is why Trasmed is actively involved in the Lash Fire working group at European level, an organisation specialized in the study of fires on Ro-Pax-type ships, and that it develops safety, preventive and risk assessment measures for this type of transport.

Transmed is the first national shipping company, and one of the first in Europe, to provide its ships with a new system of nebulised water sprinkler, located in the plan of the winery and specifically designed to be able to attack this type of fire directly affecting the lower part of the electric vehicles where the ION-Lithium batteries that cause this type of fire are located. These teams, known as BCD, have been tested in Fire Simulation Centres in Spain, such as the Jovellanos Center in Asturias, with great results.

In addition, the shipping company has installed fire-proof blankets for electric vehicles on the decks where they are stowed, avoiding the spread to other vehicles and, in addition, the staff has gas detectors and thermographic pistols for the constant monitoring of temperatures of stowed electric vehicles... implementing also, in their operational and safety procedures, regular formations and exercises for their crews, focused on the fight against fire of electric vehicles, as well as regular collaborations with the fire bodies of Valencia and Barcelona for the management of emergencies that may arise from this type of sinister.
