II World Cup Regatta 6th and 8th place for Spanish boats
Two Spanish boats participated this weekend in the Second World Cup Regata that has taken place in Lucerne (Switzerland) and has brought together more than 500 athletes from 50 countries around the world, including the great powers of the rowing and most of the boats already classified for Rio '2016.
Among the classified were our boat of2-Mformed byÁlex Sigurbjörnsson and Pau Vela. They began their participation with a fifth place in the Friday finals, with a time of 7: 01.56, which led them to contest the refishing the following day. In this, they went out for all, leading the race to the last meters in which they were overcome by the Australians who did not lose sight of them throughout the course. The tortosin couple ended up just over a second from Australia, stopping at 6: 35.90, and thus accessing the Final A. In the struggle for the medals they could do little to the overwhelming rhythm of their rivals. The Spaniards ended in sixth position with a record of 7: 12.98, after New Zealand, the Netherlands, Great Britain, South Africa and Australia.
The other boat that went to the second test of the three that make up the World Cup was the2-LMofSergio Pérez and Jesús Álvarez. In the elimination, they finished third parties (6: 50.53), leaving out the direct classification for the Final A by just one position, an achievement that corresponded to Britain and Italy. In the refish, they repeated results. Although they reduced their own brand in more than 10 seconds (6: 40.06), they could not reach Germans and Swiss who managed to move to the Final A. In the Final B, the Spanish 2-LM was second with a record of 6: 44.63, just over a second from the regatta leader, Portugal. This competition is the last in which our absolute team will participate internationally before the JJOO. Now, Álex and Pau will be fully involved in preparing for the Olympic event that will begin on August 6.
