Today Team Holcim-PRB has filed a protest against the 11th Hour Racing Team, in connection with the collision that occurred at the beginning of Stage 7 and that involved the Guyot Environnement-Team Europe.
The protest is about articles 14 and 16.1 of the RRV
RRV 14 says, in part, "A ship will avoid contact with another ship if reasonably possible. However, if a ship has the right of passage... and if it complies with the other rules of Part 2, a ship with the right of passage... does not need to act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other ship does not remain separate."
RRV 16.1 says, in part: "When a ship acquires the right of passage or when a ship with the right of passage changes its course, it is obliged to leave room for the other ship to remain separate. The other ship must operate quickly so that it offers a reasonable expectation that it will remain separate."
Andrés Pérez, president of the World Sailing International Jury for The Ocean Race, has scheduled a hearing for this protest on Thursday, June 29, at 09: 30, just before the previously scheduled Reparation Request.
The Jury of World Sailing International will hear the Repair Request on Thursday
The repair decision is the last step to take before the winner of The Ocean Race is crowned
Shortly after the start of stage 7 in The Hague, the 11th Hour Racing Team was hit by the GUYOT environment - Team Europe, which caused both ships to stay out of the stage with significant damage.
Benjamin Dutreux, the guyot environment pattern - Team Europe quickly recognized the responsibility of the collision and withdrew from the stage.
The 11th Hour Racing Team returned to The Hague and immediately prepared to repair its ship with the aim of rejoining the fleet for the Great Final in Genoa.
The Ocean Race rules do not allow a team to suspend the race in the last stage of the event, so the 11th Hour Racing Team was also forced to withdraw from stage 7, before completing its repairs and starting its journey in transport mode to reach Genoa before the In Port race on Saturday.
The team also submitted a Reparation Request to the International Jury, a common procedure in the sailing sport, through which a team can receive points if its final position has deteriorated significantly without being blamed.
The jury set this hearing for Thursday, 29 June, at 10 a.m.
Currently, the 11th Hour Racing Team is second in the general, only one point behind Team Holcim-PRB, but has not received any points in stage 7. If the jury gives you compensation of one point or more, the 11th Hour Racing Team would be the winner of The Ocean Race. If not given points, the current classification would be the final and Team Holcim-PRB would be the general winner of the race.
Since the outcome of the 11th Hour Racing compensation hearing can affect the entire IMOCA fleet, the International Jury wants to give teams the right to be present at the hearing to present their views and ask questions to ensure a fair decision as possible.
Therefore, the International Jury, acting under the Sailing Regates Rules 60.3 (b), will consider simultaneously the compensation for Team Holcim-PRB, Team Malizia, Biotherm and GUYOT environnement - Team Europe, following the collision at the beginning of Stage 7.
The World Sailing International Jury consists of six members including its President, Andrés Peréz. The full jury consists of:
Andrés Pérez IJ / IU ESP (Chairman)

Sofia Truchanowicz IJ / IU POLIJ = international jury
IU = International ArbiterThe procedures for a hearing on a Reparation Request are well established as described below.
The relevant section of the Sailing Regatta Regulations is Rule 62.1, which states in part:
A request for reparation or the decision of a protest committee to consider a remedy will be based on a claim or possibility that the score or place of a ship in a race has worsened or may be significantly worse, without its fault, for... an injury or physical damage due to the action of a ship that was in breach of a rule... and received a sanction or was penalized...Along with Rule 64.3. Decisions on Reparations: When the protest committee decides that a ship is entitled to a repair under rule 62, it will make an arrangement as fair as possible for all the ships concerned, whether or not they have asked for repair. This may be to adjust the score (see the A9 rule for some examples) or the arrival times of the ships, to leave the race, to let the results equal or to make some other arrangement...
The decision of the International Jury on the Request for Reparation shall be communicated as soon as it occurs.According to the rules of The Ocean Race, any part of the audience (any of the IMOCA teams) would have 30 minutes after the decision to submit a reopening request. If no request is made after 30 minutes, the Reparation decision is considered final.
If there is a Reopening Request, the Jury may consider the request immediately. The decision taken by the International Jury on this application is considered final.
