Xavi Vela with William Giaretton South American champions and ticket for Rio 2016. The fruit of this global and intercommunicated world in which we live is more and more frequent the fact that, by the origin of their parents, an athlete has dual nationality opts for that most favourable option to be Olympic. One case, to which recently, is that of Mateo Sanz Lanz, born and resident in Formentera, who in Rio 2016 will compete for Switzerland in the sailing tests in the RSX class. Like Mateo, another Spanish sportsman with excellent international results has won the Olympic ticket in this case competing for Brazil. This is the remer Xavi Vela, son of Brazilian father and Spanish mother, who was projected as one of the strongest promises of the Spanish rowing (1). Since his options of power to be classified for Rio were complicated, in early 2015 Xavi decided to take advantage of his dual nationality status and wager to move to Brazil where they offer him excellent possibilities for his preparation. Filed by the prestigious Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama with the endorsement of the Chilean selector, the prestigious technical espaool Welcome Front that I reward its registration (2). In Brazil they have received him with open arms and he has corresponded to achieving the Olympic Square by realizing his dream. After obtaining the best times in February in all the internal selection tests of the Brazilian Remo Confederation in the light double scull (LM2x) mode, Xavi Vela along with her club partner Willam Giaretton have competed in the South American rowing champion that awarded the latest Olympic squares for Rio. In the waters of Lake Curaurna in Valvidia, Chile, Xavi and William secured the Olympic ticket after a clear victory with more than a second and a half over the Chilean dupla. The Basque Regatta Club of Gama highlighted the incorformation of Xavi Vela. It is given the cirunstancia that, last September, his older brother Pau Vela achieved the Olympic square for the Spanish rowing in the mode of two without timonel next to Alex Sigurbjornsson. The three have in common that have grown and have formed in the club of their locality the Club of Remo Amposta that, for the first time in history, will have three remers in an Olympic Games: the brothers Xavi and Pau Vela Maggi and Alex Sigurbrgjornsson Benet. The only difference is that Xavi and Pau Vela will compete under different flags, Pau will compete with Alex on the Spanish Olympic team, while Xavi will compete with Brazil. Both will share Olympic experience but will not compete with each other as Pau and Alex will do it in the mode of two without timonel and Xavi competes in double scull. (1) In 2013, he achieved bronze medals at the World Cup in Lucerne and in the European championship of two without light timonel with David Sigurbjornsson. (2) Welcome Front is born in Amposta and for many years was technical director of the Catalan and Spanish federations. Since 2013 he has been a national selector of Chile with which he has made remarkable progress by placing two boats and three remers in the JJOO of Rio 2016. Text: Juan Manuel Surroto @ SurrocaJM
