Diego Botin debuts as a driver at the KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix Sydney
SailGP already heats engines for one of the most expected and iconic quotes on season 3 calendar: Sydney. The KPMG Australia Sail Grand Prix - 124; Sydney will be held on February 18 and 19 and a renewed Spanish SailGP team will be on the starting line.
To just three tests to complete the third season, it has implemented a series of key personal changes on the team in order to be able to improve the performance of the team and focus on being more competitive for the fourth season of the competition that will start in June of this year. Diego Botin - so far flight controller of the Spanish team - takes on the role of driver of the young Spanish team, working closely with Florian Trittel who will continue with his role of wing timer.
Joel Rodriguez - grinder- will assume the old role of Botin controlling the F50 Victoria flight. This role of flight controller is not new to the canary who already played it in Sydney in 2020. In addition, as a wager to strengthen the team, the Australian James Wierzbowski - a multidisciplinary athlete who has the experience of both flight control and grinder in several SailGP teams during the three seasons - will also join the team in Sydney.
As part of an internal restructuring, Jordi Xammar will leave his role as a driver to give way to Botin. The CEO of the Spanish team of SailGP, María del Mar de Ros will also leave his post. Diego Botin and Florian Trittel will assume responsibility for the management of the sports team while Marc Masagué will continue as Commercial Director.
The team's line up for Sydney will be: Diego Botin (Driver), Florian Trittel (Wing Trimmer), Joel Rodríguez (Flight Controller), Joan Cardona (Tactician and Grinder), Jake Lilley (Grinder), Nicole Van der Velden (Strategic) and James Wierzbowski (Grinder and Flight Controller).
