The MRCY 80-90, a team of "Champions"
The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona has an extraordinary role in the history of the Spanish candle. Its greatest splendor has lived since its foundation in the 1980s and 1990s, even though it had key moments in its development in advance. From the hand of the unforgettable Rafael Olmedo who took over in the far away 1973, just at the conclusion of the Discovery Race that was the greatest ocean race of all time. Under the baton of Don Rafael were born the Count of Gondomar Trophy and the legendary Lymington- Baiona, which related the MRCY to the most important club in the nautical world: the British Royal Ocean Racing Club, the RORC.
In the 80's, a great deal of work was done, with a Alfonso Paz Andrade that was basic in preserving the Club's philosophy, hence in this virtual team led by Rafael Olmedo I have given him the position of central with good floor and ball domain, embroiled in the rear by good defenses such as Admiral Rafael Lorenzo Montero (decisive in the birth of the Count of Gondomar and the Prince Trophy of Asturias), a Carlos Soto preto cover any defensive failure, with a great Fernando García Tobío as a zaguero, but hard in his game,... as well as the stepmother. Back in the last line a magnificent guard, Secretary José Manuel Piñeiro, always ready to fix any failure of the middle field or his defense.
Jacobo Fontán was the middle almighty and juicy center, which had as a right-hand band escorts to Rafael Barreras and to me on the left, that we made a link between the philosophy of the Club capitalized by the Alphonso- Piñeiro tandem and the most commercial, sports and projection line, that formed a front troton center and that never avoided the shock like Estanislao Durán el Comodoro, a nine of luxury and two styletes with great goal capacity, Javier de la Gandara el Cristiano of this and Pedro Campos a much outside with the best type of attack in the game, and in the best of the game.
Other excellent players also passed by the team, the case of José María García Lastra, Humberto Cervera "Piruchi," Carlos Moreno or the Contradaestre Pérez, for example. In any case the tactic was always in charge of Don Rafael, even though he liked to comment on it in the locker room and know our opinion, and until he was with us,... of his second,..., the huge, unforgettable Jesus Valverde Viñas, decisive in many victories of the team. The greatest virtue of Don Rafael as a singer was that he had a very united wardrobe, and with an excellent atmosphere.
