Nautica Digital Europe Highlights History Olimpism
Unlike many individual sports in the Olympic program, the candle limits its number of participants to one boat per country and class. In Rio 2016, only three countries will be represented in the ten Olympic classes: France, Great Britain and New Zealand. For its part, lost all options in Finn and Laser Radio, Spain will be in eight of the ten classes. As a single square, it should be noted that, according to the internal selection criteria set by the Royal Spanish Vela Federation, some of the places have been very expensive to achieve. In Laser Radial it will be for Joaquín Blanco Albalat who, having achieved the best results in the selective tests, has endorsed the Olympic Square he achieved in the 2015 world. To this end, he has had to resolve and has done so clearly with the other two candidates for Rio: Joel Rodríguez, and Jesus Rogel. Overcoming the complex road to the Olympic ticket now, Joaquín Blanco, will fine-tune its development with the experience accumulated in the pre-Olympic races held a year ago in Guanabara Bay (1). Joaquín Blanco Albalat follows the Olympic path of his father Joaquín Blanco Roca, who was in the Finn class in Los Angeles 1984, where I end up in fourth place. On that occasion, penalized in the first two races it was far from the first places, but in a formidable rebound even winning the last race it was only six points away from achieving the bronze medal. Always linked to the sailing and currently President of the Canary Federation of Sailing (2), his advice has been very valuable for the development of his son Joaquín. This is the nineteenth case at the Spanish level in which two generations of Olympic people in the same family. In this particular case they highlight the deep family roots with this sport. His great-grandfather, with the name Torrent and the Catalan origen, was already a good navigator; his paternal grandfather Joaquín Blanco Torrent (3) was the great promoter of modern sailing in the Canary Islands and the discoverer of great and talented regatists such as the Doreste brothers - his nephews (4) - or Fernando León, who have given so much to the Spanish Olympic sailing. His maternal grandfather Manuel Albalat Casadó was the founder and secretary of Club Vela Palamós (4). In 1974 his maternal uncle Manuel Albalat Aubiol, next to the Santanderino Toño Gorostegui, was proclaimed the world champion of the 470 class. The only precedent in the Olympic father and son's candle is found in Ramón Balcells and his son-in-law Balcells Román Comas, who in Munich 1972 shared a boat when they were Olympic in the Soling class, in a story that by the way had a great sense of state.
