Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman have proclaimed themselves European subchampions of the new Olympic sailing modality, the mixed 470. The Catalan team has defended the second position in the European Medal Race, in which Silvia Mas and Nico Rodríguez have also competed, who have ended up in the fifth position of the general.

These results place Spain as one of the main powers to take into account in the next class world championship, which will be held in late October in Israel. It should be recalled that 470 was, until Tokyo 2020, a ship with a male and female category and for Paris 2024 has become a mixed class.

Xammar and Brugman started their Olympic campaign in March of this year won the Princess Sofia Trophy and since then have been placed as one of the best crews in the world. In this 470 European, Catalans have remained in podium positions since the beginning of the championship and finally won the silver medal. The gold has been for the Swedes Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson, and the bronze has fallen into the Italian Giacomo Ferrari and Bianca Carusso.

Less adaptation time has had Silvia Mas and Nico Rodríguez, who first joined the 470 in early August. A Silvia injury had kept them away from the water and after a month of training they have achieved a fifth meritorious position in which it has been their first international competition. Since the first compasses of the championship, Silvia and Nico have held podium positions although in the penultimate day they fell to the fourth square. In addition to these two teams, the Spanish Maria Bover and Pablo García (36), Neus Ballester and Pablo García (42) and Pablo Ruiz and Marta Peñarrubia (43) have also competed in the 470 European Championship.

The competition started last Tuesday 13 and has been held until Sunday 18 with a participation of 52 teams representing 20 countries. The next international meeting of the class will be the 470 world event to be held in Israel from 21 to 29 October.

The 470 European Championship has started today in Turkey with three contested sleeves and a first ranking in which the Spaniards, with Jordi Xammar and Nora Brugman as leaders followed by Silvia Mas and Nicolás Rodríguez.

As planned by the organisation, the wind conditions have been perfect for the first three European tests. Xammar and Brugman have sailed in the Yellow group, adding two first posts and one second they have ruled out.
