The Maiden makes a technical stop at STP Shipyard Palma

STP Shipyard Palma receives legendary Maiden, a ship that made history in the sailing world for being the first ship to turn around the world, tripulated only by women.

This was more than 30 years ago, in 1989 / 90, when Tracy Edwards capitalized the Maiden on the Whitbread Round The World Race and since then, the notoriety of his feat has not stopped growing until it became legend.

At the age of 24, Edwards managed to set up a ship - the Maiden- built in 1979, and to recruit 12 women who in a few weeks managed to gear to perfection. But nothing was easy. To get the boat, he had to mortgage his house and it was the crew he recruited, who took care of its restoration.

The 12 women put themselves to work in a shipyard until they left the boat ready and released ties to participate in the 32,000-mile round of the world in 6 stages. No one gave a hard time for them and they were a cause of laughter until, fighting against wind and tides, and why not say, the extreme cold of Antarctica, they won the first victory in one of the most difficult stages of the journey.

After winning this stage, the Maiden got something unusual. In each partial goal, thousands of people came to receive this extraordinary crew with cheers and applause for the feat done until they were escorted in the final phase of the feat.

Currently, the Maiden is still active in carrying out expeditions around the world and only for women with the The Maiden Factor project to raise funds and support community programmes to give access to education to girls around the world, a project driven by Tracy Edwards itself. In addition, thousands of people continue to be inspired by the work of the entire Maiden and The Maiden Factor team, which is made up only of women who carry out the entire operation of the ship and the different projects in which they work.
