The temporary causes the Greenpeace Witness to recale in Palma
Marina Port de Mallorca, located in the heart of Palma, has received the Sailor Witness property of Greenpeace, which has been forced to make a stop during its journey through the Mediterranean due to the adverse weather conditions of these days. As soon as conditions improve the ship plans to sail again, heading for Israel, where they will carry out an interesting research project.
The Witness, of 22.5 m in length and launched in 2003 in South Africa, was acquired by Greenpeace in September 2021 and put into operation in November after a reference that includes ecological improvements such as solar panels, wind turbines and an optimized energy management system, to incorporate it into its fleet dedicated to research projects around the world.
This is the first incursion of this ship into the hands of Greenpeace, from a journey that began in Amsterdam last February and plans to reach Israel. So far, its crew of seven people and led by Daniel Mares, has sailed more than 1,700 nautical miles to Mallorca and are planning to travel another 1,600 nautical miles to the sea of Israel, where they will carry out their research of the marine species that inhabit that area.
The boat is equipped with a powerful hydrophone that allows them to hear and collect any type of sound at sea, which is later analyzed and classified, and can identify what type of animal it is, how far it is from the boat, how many animals there are in the group, its size and much more information that makes it easier to know the type of marine life that exists in the area and its characteristics; which is very useful to mark future proposals for the protection of the oceans. It aims to protect 30 per cent of the oceans by 2030.
