The participation could be reduced to 150 ships by the limitation of moorings in the port of Sant Antoni of Portmany
As with so many major events, the pandemic has had a major impact on The Salt Route... after the cancellation of 2020, the race could finally be held in 2021, restricting participation to 50%.
By 2022, the Organizing Committee is confident that it will be able to return to normal, both at the date and programme level and in terms of the volume of participation.
The organization has renewed the agreements with the intention of reactivating the social dimension, which characterizes this race, with the corresponding hosting events in Barcelona and Denia, as well as with the closing party in Sant Antoni de Portmany,
As far as participation is concerned, the drip of inscriptions has been constant since the registration was opened in October, coinciding with the International Nautical Hall of Barcelona. If traditionally available places are exhausted one month before departure, on this occasion the Organizing Committee believes that it could even be advanced to February due to the reduction of the available spaces to host the race in the port of Sant Antoni de Portmany.
In the years leading up to the pandemic, the race registered 1,200 participants on about 200 ships, but as reported by the port authorities, for this next edition, it will not be able to have more than 150 moorings. The collaboration of the entities involved, Ajuntment de Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ports IB and Club Nàutic de Sant Antoni will be key to ensuring that this high race, the most popular in the Mediterranean, maintains the volume of participation that characterizes it.
The Sal Route is the highest race with the largest participation of the Mediterranean. It has been held every year since 1989 in the period of Easter. This long-distance race has two points of departure: Club Marítimo Port Ginesta and Real Club Nautico de Denia, and a single point of arrival: Club Nautico de Sant Antoni de Portmany in Ibiza.
The competition is attended by about 200 ships manned by an average of 5-6 people, so the total number of competitors is between 1,000 and 1,200.
The data of participation in The Salt Route show a clear upward trend. Of the 747 crew members registered in 2013, 1,203 were registered in the 2019 edition. In 2020 the test could not be held because of the Covid and in 2021 it was organized by limiting the capacity to 50%.
It highlights the rapid and significant internationalization of the test, which in 2013 had 13% of foreign flag vessels, while that percentage stood at 27% in 2019.
