In the Supermaxi class, the expected duel between two versions of the majestic J-Class did not let down... the triumph corresponded to the Velsheda, a 39.5-metre-long original model of 1933 and restored in 1999, which was imposed on the Topaz, an exact replica of a 1935 design, which with 42.7 meters was the largest ship in this edition.
An impressive fleet of 44 ships with length between 60 and 140 feet reaffirmed the status of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2021 as a world reference in the exclusive niche of large-calibre races. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and the International Maxi Association, and with the collaboration of Rolex since 1985, the event was held in the waters of Porto Cervo.
The organizer Yacht Club Costa Smeralda divided the participants into five main classes according to their size and potential to face in a five-day race program for one of the most acclaimed race fields in the world: the impressive coast of Porto Cervo and the archipelago of La Magdalena. The winners of the 31st Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup were the J-Class Velsheda (Supermaxi category), the WallyCento Magic Carpet Cubed (Maxi), the Maxi 72 Cannonball (Mini Maxi 1), the Reichel and Pugh 79 Capricorno (Mini Maxi 2) and the Wally 78 Lyra (Mini Maxi 3).
In Mini Maxi 1, the Maxi 72 Cannonball of Italian Dario Ferrari defended its 2019 title against the hard competition offered by Vesper, Proteus and Bella Minte, which ended at less than three points from the champion as a testimony of equality in water.
In both Mini Maxi 2 and Mini Maxi 3, the victory corresponded to the two dominators of the week, who barely gave their rivals options: the R & P 79CapricornoAlessandro Del Bono and Terry Hui's Wally 78 Lyra.
The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup enjoys an unparalleled status in the world of large-length races that has been shown again in this edition. Its arguments are inconstable: exceptional location, impeccable organization and an imposing fleet made up of the most extraordinary monocascos sailed by the best specialists in the sector... the 32nd edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be held in September 2022.
