The ships that make up the 31st Escoltas Squad are of the new class "Alvaro de Bazan," of modern design and remarkable military capabilities. Its ability to be present in all kinds of scenarios, with the security provided by its AEGIS combat system, makes it a valuable tool in the service of the foreign policy of the Government of the Nation, not only through conventional operations, but also in peace, humanitarian or United Nations resolutions.
The F-100 Fragata are multi-purpose vessels, in which the following main aspects have been addressed:
- Middle-sized ocean escolta.
- Optimized to act as a command and control ship in a conflict scenario, capable of operating integrated into an allied fleet and of providing coverage to expeditionary forces.
- It is able to operate in both coastal areas and on the high seas in a flexible manner, according to the demands of each conflict situation.
- High air capacity.
The F-100 Fragatas project involves important challenges, including:
- To have an Aegis System, around the SPY-1D radar, which so far was mounted on type-destroyer or cruise ships, of much greater displacement.
- To integrate for the first time the national sensors and weapons that constitute the rest of the ship's Combat System into the Aegis system.
- Other specific developments such as the Navigation Data Distribution Network (DIANA) or the Integrated Platform Control System.
The parking base is in the Military Arsenal of Ferrol (La Coruña), is an Arsenal built in the 18th century, which conserves its buildings and structures but has at the same time been modernized in order to maintain and provide the necessary logistical support required by the ships of the 21st century.
