6. LOUIS VUITTON CUP 1992... DIRE STRAIT, OLMEDO, ZULUETA AND CALVO SOTEL

During the General Optic Regatta in 1989, there was some news that in those years was a simple illusion. The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, by the DEA whose founding partners were Pedro Campos, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Touges and Luis de la Peña... announced to the surprise and stupor of its own and strangers, that it had presented challenge for the American Cup.

After two years of intense work and not a few problems, in 1991 the Spanish expedition under the name of SPAIN 92 QUINTO CENTENARIO was installed in San Diego Bay... and it was that two high personalities had made it possible with their support: Don Juan Carlos I and President González.

The vision of both, by betting on a project that would place Spain among the world's business elite, together with a group of elected countries: Australia, New Zealand, France, Japan, Italy, Sweden and the United States as a defense... was a good one with a state-level profitability... amazing.

There were dozens of anecdotes... but we're going to tell you three only in this delivery... the first one happened at the party of businessman Bill Koch, whose "America's Cup" would win the American Cup... the American billionaire who is currently valued at about $2 billion. Well... Do you know who he hired to threaten the party where the crews were on one of his farms?... then to DIRE STRAIT... and that Koch is not from Bilbao.

In the Anglo-Saxon world, as far as sailing is concerned... the highest authority of a nautical club is not the president... It's the Commodor. Well, the problem that came up was that those who invited the official acts were not Rafael Olmedo as president... but Estanis Durán as a Commodore... and what did we have to do?... then to report that RAFAEL OLMEDO had resigned as president and was the new comedian... typical picardia Spain...

Then in the official drawing of the Louis Vuitton Cup at the San Diego Yacht Club, there was a very emotional fact... that not a few of us had a few tears of emotion sprung. The presenter in an act of Hollywood levelAnd then his national anthem sounded.

And Spain's turn came. The spectacular panel was on big SPANA... followed the script scrupulously and the presenter mentioned our team, athletes, designers and when he finished his intervention he turned to the music band (from the American Navy)... in that AGUSTIN ZULETA gave a cry and asked not to sound the anthem... came up with a black marker in his hand and put the label on the N... and on the panel he went over to read SPAIN... and the national anthem rang. Exciting.

Finally, another very nice note. It was the first race of the Louis Vuitton Cup, in which AUSTRALIA and SPAIN were measured. On each ship the figure of "guest" and Spain had in it the uncle of Pedro Campos, the former president of the Government of Spain LEOPOLDO CALVO SOTELO.

In the facilities of SPAIN that was attached to those of AMERICA3 by the way, there were many nerves, many people and many illusions... I saw Leopold and I told Federico Arias and Miguel Angel Roselló: "We've fucked up, with this gafe aboard we're sure to beat it."... the latter told me "I think Leopold has heard you"... and I took it from him, with a certain no.

And the race ended, achieving something historic SPAIN GANO A AUSTRALIA... being escorted our ship by tens of thousands of voices (more than 50,000 viewers were talked about in the water and on the ground) to the rhythm of a song (Beatles version) that was in fashion by The Manolos...

The Spain comes 92 5th Centenary to the base of Spain... he addresses me Leopold Calvo Sotelo and tells me everything serious: "How can I not be so much a GAFE," and he shook my hand with an accomplice smile...

7.WHEN THE PLOME IS MADERA PINTADA WITH PORPURINE GRIS PLATA

Nautical Week of the Port of Santa Maria we are in 1990... immediately before had been held the Grand Prix of Vela Baileys that won the Duke of Arion with its three-quarter ton "Larios" the Royal Mediterranean Club of Malaga... the prize a bottle of natural-sized Baileys of gold of 24 km! made by Malde in La Coruña (with just over 1 kilo of gold).

We are on the day of measurement, and a young Jesús Tornero usual on these sides in the races of Mount Real of Baiona... is hired by Nicolás Terry as one of the meters from which he was then the most important race in Spain... King's Cup included.

The metering works begin and Jesus Tornero detects something abnormal in the checks to a ship, very regatta by the way... by noticing very rare "the usual lead ingots placed inside, to improve the measurement results"... neither short nor lazy Tornero did the test of "nail", and when it is your surprise that the lead of the ballast, it allowed to penetrate a nail without much effort.

He immediately told Nicholas... And Terry's love for fair play and the independence of judges and meters in the candle is already known... came out like a rocket from his offices in Puerto Sherry in search of the "Cheater."... and when it is his surprise and that of Jesus... that the offending ship had undertaken the flight to Cadiz... to everything that his machine gave...

8. IT'S NOT GOOD TO SLEEP THE MOËT & CHANDON... THE THURSDAY

We're in 1985, we're in the Le Figaró Regata on his first arrival in Baiona.

A year before Eric Tabarly in person, aboard his Penduick VII, had appeared on the Monte Real of "spy-informer" the director of the race, the legendary Michel Malinowski, and it seems that the report was splendid... because within two months a senior executive of the Parisian rotative Jean Malleret I was starting negotiations with the Baiona Yacht Club, which came to an end.

It had become fashionable at the Rafael Olmedo Club (as in the Maritime of Santander) to give the arrivals of the major race, with gunshot... in vintage plan.

And so it was... in an evening of August the 50 half ton that took part in the Le Figaró solo race, began to reach the Villa de la Pinta... with Philippe Pouton in the head...

But of course It was 50! And the arrival was long until the early morning, not in vain they came from a stage of 550 miles no less... and the judges among those that were Jesus Tornero, George Alonso and Púas Retolaza, the fruit of the tiredness for the very long day... had no other idea but to carry the bronze canyon as a barbed, Other cartridges other than those of sage... which caused several patterns to hover the three judges, with affectionate "cochon," "connard..."

The next day, the award was given, and Pas Retolaza When Pouton picked up his prize adorned with Moët Chandon... he took one of the bottles from him and splashed with chandelier jet included: the mayor of Baiona, the representative of the Xunta and Malleret himself... And it's that the Púas is a lot of Púas... and like the wild thing, it comes from many years ago.

9. _

Fifth Trophy Count of Gondomar... summer of 1980... the experiment of the high race to Póvoa do Varzim (down, right in front of the beach and up).

On the way out a superboat... the Swan 441 Moonduster with the legendary Dennis Doyle of the shipowner and master... of good rivals to another level, case of the Lanzal (C & C 37, which was Foula later), the Contention 30 (Xeito and Ardora), the Contention 33 Dente do Can, the Salseiro that was a beautiful but strange boat of race... on horse between half and quarter ton... the Cutty Sark another half with a dream crew: Gandara, Campos, Lstra... the Holland Media Tone Silver Atlantic of Rudy Burmester and Antonio Serodio to the Ellio and the Ellito... the two of the Rulo and the Rulo... It was about 20 good competition ships.

This race had several good anecdotes... that we will be counting little by little... and one that could end in tragedy, which fortunately never happened.

It was the middle of August. In the first days the Rias Bajas Regata had been held, as the canons command... coinciding with the Great Week of Vigo, with the Festivals of the Christ of Victory... then came the ships of the II Lymington- Baiona the Royal Mount organized in the mythical London RORC with that 80 British feet (Ocean 80 Greyhounden)... in The one who sailed in that race three Spaniards... Alfonso Paz Andrade, Jacobo Fontán and José Manuel Piñeiro... and as a dessert the Count of Gondomar with some British or Irish ships, such as the aforementioned Moonduster.

Everything went well in the first two sleeves... but the last one was that of Povoa: almost 100 miles half down and the other one up... and the wind played us all a bad pass: nailed with 25 knots at best, and 30-35, or even more.

The result was the constant accidents and breakages in the fleet. The exit had been about noon... and already at the edge of six o'clock in the afternoon, they give us a report on the ship of the Póvoa beacon: The Moonduster has turned first! And we don't see anyone else... what wind do you have... over 25 knots.

After an hour or perhaps more, new call to the former Yates Club office: they have turned the second and third ships, in this order: Cutty Sark and Pairo Two... however the concern was evident in the Organization, because the conditions of wind and sea were very harsh... there were ships that chose to stay in the Portuguese city of Póvoa do Varzim and to withdraw... which was what did among others Pairo Two... but there were those that continued in regatta.

Among them the Contempt-33, which had taken the name of Chubasco in a three-quarter world world, and which was recently the Dente do Can, of Julio Pedrosa, Antonio Blanco, Modesto Rodríguez Blanco and other friends who had some kind of regatta union... the other the quoted Salseiro from Manolo Blanco.

Well, already close to Povoa that marked the equator of the race... that is to the south of the mouth of the river Miño The wind continued to rise to 35 or more knots, and despite the skill and veteran of the Herculine crew... The Salseiro was left without government after a distressing situation... his luck is that the Dente knights, did not doubt it a second... they withdrew and sailed to the ship of the Royal Nautical Club of La Coruña... to take him towed to the port of La Guardia... after eight hours of a very hard trailer!!!.

Between the two crews, such friendship was born, which until today lasts after more than 40 years... a friendship that will never disappear.

The last ship to cross the line of arrival at the Prince's Tower was the Falke... and he did so with many problems because of the breakages he collected... at 8: 00 in the afternoon... very just to attend the closing of a Gondomar, for heroes.

10.THE CHS... Is that so? _

The ANC was the National Cruise Association... that in the '90s he became the RANC... because of that royalty thing. His life was based on the fact that he was the authority of heavy sailing in Spain, and consequently he issued the Rating IOR. It was based in the Mill of Spain, next to the centre of the legendary Velera Marsal.

One day with Arturo Delgado de Presidente and Gerardo Pombo de jefazo de la Fede... an assembly was held in Barcelona, on the occasion of the Nautical Hall... which decided that the RANC would become something merely decorative, by losing the authorityand stop issuing the IOR certificates.

Previously the Mount Real Club of Yates had launched the known as CHS... initials of Channel Handicap System... which was theoretically very simple, but which provided very particular data and especially suspects.

The RANC denoted him as a churro (he had no reason to)But after the loss of the IOR and as a result of the modern IMS... he saw in the CHS a source of income and José de Vallés was an angry enemy of the Channel... he became his defender ultranza...

On the other hand not a few shipowners... who sold the one that were more pure amateurs than the Baron of Coubertainthey declared when they got the CHS... with the intention of achieving a good rating... They didn't use spinnaker!... and then they used three different ones in a race... and that's what I was just moving them to compete...

Finally, the most surprising: if a ship applied for a London Rating... that is, the English Rating... the factor offered a number, the final Rating... but an eye if he applied to the French UNCL was another, and sometimes very different.

It was especially curious how Asterix's protected the One Design of Jeanneau who in France had a 0.985 TCF and yet for Alan Green's boys in the British RORC had a 1.020 factor.

Most of you certainly don't know about Channel... but if you know that multiplying the time converted to seconds by 0.985 instead of 1.020... changes something... right?
