Two decades ago, Spain did not host the Optimist World Cup, the last two were in A Coruña in 2000 and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2003.

The Club de Vela Ballena Alegre, located in the Gerundense town of Sant Pere Pescador, has submitted a candidacy to host the World Championship of the Optimist class in 2023.

In recent days, and taking advantage of the celebration of the European Championship in El Puerto de Santa María, the Catalan candidacy to host this important event has been presenting its project and seeking support for the election that will take place on July 7, coinciding with the 2021 World Cup that will be held in the Lake di Garda. The other nominations are: Yeosu (South Korea), Al Mussanah Sports City (Oman), Saint Petersburg Yacht Club (Russia) and Jadralni Klub 'Pirat' Portoroz (Slovenia).

The CV Ballena Alegre has a long experience in the European Championship Youth of Kitesurf, the Cup of Espan of Catamarans, the European and World of Catamaran F18 and the prestigious Cli tional of formation of the young regalsts of Optimist - WindBA during ten years.

The upcoming light sailing events planned are the organization of the Hobie Multi European Championship in September 2021 and the 23rd Hobie 16 Worlds in 2022, consolidating a team of internationally recognized work, which at each event offers participants the best stage of competition, combined with a wide range of activities and spaces to share experiences among the regatists of different nationalities.

The success of the international candidacy depends on many different factors and the Club de Vela Ballena Alegre plans together with the Club Nàutic l'Escala a a cycle of regatas and training activities for young regatists that include the candidacies of the Championship of Catalonia 2022 and the Championship of Espan in 2023.
