Surf in California. Road to the best California beaches.
Surf in California. Road to the best California beaches.
California is a paradise for surf lovers, we can surf on almost any beach on the coast all year round. The best way to go along the California coast is by taking the Pacific Highway (CA-1) that takes us from San Francisco to San Diego or vice versa, about 800 miles from a spectacular panoramic road that borders the coast and accompanies us to the best beaches, a route that is also highly recommended if we just want to do tourism. The best-known surfing areas in California are San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. Each area has its own characteristics but what is clear is that we will never surf alone, we will always find people on the beach. The closer we approach San Diego the better weather and sun we will find, and although the water temperature is generally cold, perhaps in the summer and October months we can surf in short.
We will start our particular tour from San Francisco and we will recommend some of the most emblematic beaches for surfing in California. The first mandatory stop is Half Moon Bay, here we find one of the mythical beaches, Maverick with giant waves that can reach up to 15 meters. We don't usually find surfers only when there's a championship, but it's worth just looking at the impressive waves.
A little further south we reach the area of Santa Cruz, considered one of the mecas of surfing and place of birth of many of the main brands of this sport. The area is fully prepared for tourism and we will find the best hotels in Santa Cruz, by the coast, has a very agitated nightlife. On Santa Cruz we have beaches for all tastes, from Capitolia Beach or Cowell's for the less expert to Steamer Lane or Natural Bridges with large and unpredictable waves. Other beaches to be highlighted are The Hook or Moss Landing. On the other side of Monterrey Bay, right next to Pebble Beach and Carmel we find another of the beaches worth visiting, Ghost Tree another beach with giant waves that we can only contemplate unless we are surfers.
From Santa Barbara, already in southern California (SoCal) is when we are still going to have the most feeling of being in California, the temperature starts to rise, the sun is more intense and everything is much more related to the surf world. In Santa Barbara we will find the best surf schools, and for all levels. The best beaches in the Santa Barbara area are found to the south, Rincon Beach, internationally famous is certainly one of the best waves in California, very massified especially in summer. Another of the highlights are Carpentry or Jalama. In the nearby county of Ventura we will also find good waves, as on the beach of C street.
The closer we approach Los Angeles the more populated we will find the beaches, and the famous Malibu beach is no exception, although it is considered a perfect wave to practice, small and very long, we will always find it full. The views and atmosphere you breathe are exceptional. We recommend surfing in Malibu on full rune nights, a real luxury. Very close is Topone Beach, a small cove with a wave that you're sure will like.
Already in southern Los Angeles, in Orange County, we will find magnificent waves in practically every village. Huntington Beach known as the city of surfing, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Dana Point, Sant Clemente,... Huntington Beach is where we will find the best hotels in California to stay, a top-notch destination for surf lovers, with a lot of evening marching. The beach is very extensive and we will easily see where the waves break, all of high quality with a perfect environment for a full day of surfing. A little further south we will reach Newport Beach, its best known beach is The Wedge, a giant and quite dangerous wave. Trestles in Sant Clemete is considered one of the best waves in California, to get there you have to walk about 30 minutes, but it is certainly worth it. Other outstanding beaches in Sant Clemente are T-Street, San Onofre and North Beach.
If we still have the strength to surf, San Diego offers us a lot of surfing breaks, very close to the city is Mission Beach, where we will also find the Wave House. Other beaches in San Diego and the Jolla are Swami's, Cardiff, Del Mar, Windansea, La Loma and not forgetting the best wave of San Diego in Bars Beach San Diego.
Although all year round we can surf in California, the best time is at the end of September and October, the sun still shines with a lot of intensity and the temperatures are still very summer and the Pacific is beginning to move more bravely.
