The Spanish Olympic sailing team, ESP Sailing Team, adds two new additions to the Tokyo Olympic Games that will be held this summer in the waters of Enoshima, Japan. The Catalan Cristina Pujol and the canary Joel Rodríguez have been appointed as national representatives of the Laser Radial and Standard classes respectively by the Technical Committee of Olympic Classes of the Royal Spanish Vela Federation, in the absence of ratification of this decision by the Spanish Olympic Committee.

The last international test of the Laser class (now called ILCA) was held in Vilamoura, Portugal, and the last country squares for Tokyo were put into play, as the Spanish squadron was fighting in the Standard category. In the same race, the national athletes of Laser Radio were pushing for the nominal square in the Olympic Games, since Spain was already classified after the resignation of New Zealand.

Joel Rodríguez achieved the goal of classifying the country at the end of the test in the ninth general position, placing Spain in the first position of the nations in the position. This performance, coupled with the results collected over the last few seasons, has been key when the RFEV's Olympic Sailing Technical Committee made the decision to award him the ticket to Tokyo.

Cristina Pujol, for her part, was the best of the Spanish athletes gathered in Vilamoura and closed the championship at the 22nd of the general, while the canary Martina Reino was vigesimosta and the bat Fátima Reyes trigesimosegunda. This result was the one that gave Pujol the position of national representative in Tokyo.

With these two additions, Spain already adds nine of ten confirmed Olympic classes with a nominal square granted for its participation in the Tokyo Olympic Games. The Finn class is the only one who has yet to get the country square. The Spaniards of this category will compete for the Olympic Square during the next Finn World Championship that will be held from 8 to 12 May in Porto, Portugal.
