The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food today published in the Official State Gazette resolutions updating the census of the fleet authorised for the exercise of bluefin tuna fishing and regulating the fishing year in the Canary Islands by 2021. Both resolutions substantially improve the conditions of this fishery over the previous years. This year, the bluefin tuna fishing season will open next February 8, a month earlier with respect to previous campaigns, with the aim of allowing access to this highly migratory species from the beginning of its passage through the Canary Islands. In particular, the fishery will be articulated in two periods. In the first, which covers 8 February to 15 April, catch limits per vessel are maintained, depending on their mode, thus avoiding Olympic fishing and ensuring minimum catches for all participating vessels. From 16 April, the limits per boat are removed, so that the quota that has not been used may be caught by any canary vessel. This season, the Canary fleet will have a total of 518 tonnes of bluefin tuna, which can be increased in the coming months by compensating the 80 tonnes of quota that the Canary Islands did not use in 2020. The total number of vessels benefiting is 249.
