Spanish launches pilot program of 49er with the point of view in Paris 2024

The National Plan for Sports Technology of the RFEV develops a pilot programme with the 49er class that pursues a high-level training for young crews within the Olympic scheme... Malagasy technician Carlos Llamas works with six crews from different autonomous communities that are demonstrating an optimal progression in their formation
In the last quarter of 2020, the National Plan of Sports Tecnification of the Royal Spanish Vela Federation launched a pilot programme dedicated to the 49er class, whose good results are laying the foundations for an extrapolable plan to other disciplines in order to strengthen the formation of our future Olympic regatists, already working for the Paris Games 2024.
Based on the Santander CEAR, the six crew members selected have spent the last four months working on the training plan agreed with the Malagasy technician Carlos Llamas, who has carried out a whole series of joint and individual activities with each of the crews, with the support of Antón Paz, Ero Pons and Ruben Morán for their development.
But not only the facilities of the Santander CEAR, the "house" of the ESP Sailing Team, are at the disposal of these young promises, but they have also been supervised by Berta Betanzos, the physical preparation of the RFEV in the new facilities of the CEAR gym. Other members of the multidisciplinary team of the RFEV, especially Luis Morales and Mari Carmen Vaz, physiotherapist and doctor respectively, have collaborated and monitored the development of the training, with consultations and physical therapy sessions... Carlos Paz, responsible for the PNTD, tells us about each of the crews involved in the project, providing the current assessment of its progress:
- The balar Albert Torres and the canary Elías Aretz are, to this day, one of the best crews. Both have been highlighted as patterns in child and youth categories, Albert in Optimist and 420 and Elias in 420. Despite the short time sailing together they are progressing very fast, especially in low wind conditions. They are 100% in their Olympic project and will be one of the crews with the possibility of entering the Olympic team in the short term. They are adapting their physical conditions to the class and will soon be able to get good results with all conditions.
- Andrés Barrio, from the Canary territory, and Antonio Torrado, from the Valencian region, have been sailing together for only four months, although they already have several years in the class with other crew members. They are the best physical skills for the 49er class since Andrew measures 1.92 and Antonio 1.78. It is currently the best crew in medium-strong wind conditions. They must continue their excellent progression and adapt as a team to all conditions. They are still young and is one of the most options in the future for their work and delivery.
- Martin Wizner and Pablo García have arrived from Galicia. Martin is one of the best regatists in recent years in the youth category, as a number of the world and European in 420 agree. Pablo García also has its origins in 420 but has been competing longer in 49er. They are making rapid progress and must still progress in terms of physical preparation and weight for the class. A large-future crew in the medium / long term.
- Pol and Alex Marsans are two young Catalan brothers with very good conditions for the 49th by their height. They come from getting good results in 420 and are a very hard-working couple and very eager. A team to take into account in youth category the next three years and with a good medium / long-term future.
- Two islands make up a promising crew with long-term objectives, the Balar Conrad Konitzer and the Canary Simbad Quiroga that sails through the RCN of Palma. Conrad is, along with Martin Wizner, one of our most laureated athletes in youth categories. He has joined Simbad in this project by losing the option of competing in youth championships due to the age of the crew. They are progressing very fast in recent months and are quite competitive with low wind conditions.
- The Bat crew of Rafa de la Hoz and José Manuel Ruiz close for the moment the group included in the program. It is also quite new in the class and both have achieved outstanding results in youth categories of Laser. It is a crew that must continue to work and train a lot to get their physical condition adapted to the class. Studies are very well being compatible with the Olympic campaign.
