The Tokyo Olympic Games Organizing Committee and the International Sailing Federation (World Sailing) have published the Tokyo 2020 Regatta Announcement, a document that sets the standards and timetable for the sailing competition

The Opening Ceremony of the JJ.OO. has been set for July 23, 2021, and the Closing Ceremony for August 8, with the schedule of races of all categories of sailing distributed between July 25 and August 4, having on August 5 as a day of reserve.

With a total quota of 350 regatists and 250 vessels, Spain is classified to participate in seven of the 10 classes admitted (49er, 49er FX, Nacra 17, 470 M, 470 F, RS: X M and RS: X), still having the opportunity to qualify in Finn, Laser Standard and Radial.

The RFEV has already announced the composition of the crews that will come to Tokyo 2020 in the classes 470 M: Jordi Xammar and Nicolás Rodríguez; 470 F: Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero; 49er: Diego Botín and Iago López Marra; 49er FX: Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló; Nacra 17: Tara Pacheco and Florian Trittel; and RS: X F: Blanca Manchón. In RS: X Male, the sportsman who will represent Spain is still to be determined.

Eleven days of competition
After the timely days of measurement and the expected Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games, the candle will live 11 exciting days of race between July 25 and August 4, leaving August 5 as a booking day.

For all classes, the competition format includes a series of 10 (Laser St, Laser R, Finn, 470 M and 470 F) or 12 races (RS: X M and F, 49er, 49er FX and Nacra 17), after which the top ten of each class will fight a double-score (final) Medal Race, provided that six or more preliminary tests have been contested.

The operational base of the sailing at the JJ.OO. of Tokyo will be located in Enoshima, a small island of overflowing nature located at the mouth of the Katase River, whose port will be the centre of operations. Thus the bay of Sagami will be the stage where the six planned regatta fields will be deployed, named Enoshima, Kamakura, Zushi, Fujisawa, Sagami and Hayama. They shall dispute the planned tests which may be of trapezoidal or barlovento / sotavento route.

The estimated navigation time for each test will be 20-25 minutes for the RS: X, 30 minutes for the 49er, 49er FX and Nacra 17, and 50 minutes for the 470, Finn and Laser Standard and Radial. The Medal Race will not exceed 25 minutes.

On the planned calendar, the RS: X M and F will premiere the Olympic Sailing Medal on 31 July; on 1 August we will meet the Medallists of Laser Standard and Radio; on 2 August to those of 49er and 49er FX; on 3 August to Finn and Nacra 17; and on 4 August to 470 Male and Female.

Latest classification opportunities
For the classes in which Spain has not yet achieved the classification as a country, in Laser Standard and Laser Radio the opportunity will come with the French Olympic Week that will take place in Hyères, between 17 and 24 April 2021, while for the Finn class it will be the Finn Gold Cup, which will be held in Porto from 4 to 12 May 2021.

The places to be awarded in Finn are two and will be decided on the Portuguese meeting, one for Europe and one for Africa. In the case of the Laser, both Standard and Radial, six places are still free, and the countries of Asia and Europe are fighting for them; the French meeting will decide on the two places allocated to European countries, both in Radial and Standard.

For the time being, they are Britain, New Zealand and Japan - the latter as an organizing country - the only ones with representation in all Olympic classes. France has only to classify the Finn and Porto, as for Spain, will be its last chance. The United States also has a place in nine of the ten classes, but will no longer have the opportunity to qualify in 49er, although if one of the countries with a place is retired in the class, they are the first on the list.

The small group of countries with seven classified classes is Spain, Canada - for whom there is no more possibility of classification - and the Netherlands, which also pursues Finn Square, in addition to those of 470 M and 17 Nacra. And one point in favour of Spain: in the list of low-rated reassignments, it is the first country in Finn and the second in Laser Standard and Laser Radial.

The total number of places for 30 vessels and 42 regatists remains to be allocated.
