ABB-HDF agreement to develop propulsion hydrogen cells on large ships
The German company for the manufacture of equipment and technology, ABB, has recently signed an agreement with Hydrogène de France (HDF), a company specialized in the development of hydrogen solutions, for the development and production of a high-power fuel cell for marine applications.
This agreement aims to optimize fuel cell manufacturing processes and capabilities, in order to achieve generation plants capable of producing several megawatts of energy for use on large ships. This project also involves Ballard Power Systems, which specializes in the use of proton exchange membranes (PEM). These fuel cells will be manufactured at the new HDF facilities in Bordeaux, France.
Hydrogen-powered fuel cells produce electricity through an electrochemical reaction, the residual product of which is water and therefore with a minimum environmental impact. This technology, which is already being tested on small and short-distance ships, is considered to be one of the future solutions for the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions and the decarbonization of maritime transport.
