1989 was no doubt an essential year for José Luis Suevos and the Monte Real Club de Yates.
The Barcelona Nautical Hall was advanced at the suggestion of the International Association to avoid coincidences with other prestigious samples at European level, and what happens there I would like to see historical: both for the Asturian businessman, and for the club of the Villa de la Pinta, which maintained an important rivalry with the Nautico de Vigo... which was left small thanks basically to the presence of Suevos.
The dates of the "Salon" from 3 to 11 December under the motto "Go to sea."... and of course the Milmi was not made to the sea... he got full... to rejoice that we were part of his surroundings...
The good news begins soon... before the Nautical Salon to Spain the ORC gives him in London, the organization of the World Championship 1 / 4 ton... the decision was supported among others by the international Vigo judge Sequdino Cigarán and by the unforgettable Dr. Pierre Chambonnet, great friend of Estanislao Durán... then Commodore of the Yates Club... which was the one who brought him to our country... and of course to the RANC that was the national authority of which Duran was its international representative, had no choice but to support the Gallegos...
On the other hand, the increasingly restless Suevos, convinced Baileys to sponsor the so-called Grand Prix of Vela Baileys.
With the approval of the distribution company in Spain... he entrusted it to Nicolás Terry and to me as a man of communication and image... it was an original and very ambitious project that he intended to bring together in Puerto Sherry, the best ships of the Mediterranean and the best of the Atlantic... with a lot of glamour, with a lot of money in the magical environment of the best regatta field in Spain... of the Bay of Cadiz.
The spectacular prize for the winner "a bottle of gold dancers." and for the silver podium companions.
José Luis Suevos had left the "manufacture"for being a family of jewelers... and the job I charged to the number one The same men who made the monumental Tower of Hercules... the king of the summer fubtol tournaments: the Trophy Teresa Herrera.
Just finished, the piece was taken personally to the Nautical Hall to be exposed... and cost 2,500,000 pesetas! of those of 1988... but above all it was maystatic... a jewel that would by the way win the Duke of Arion.
But here the good news is not over in the Suevos environment... it convinces Monaco Yacht Club with the help of José Eraso, so that a test of the Offshore World Championship will be held in Portals.
Milmi knew perfectly well that one of those skippers "formula 1 of the sea," the "Gance of the Gance" was piloted by the husband of Carolina of Monaco... by the most admired Stephano Casiraghi.
Suevos puts the project in the hands of José Eraso who directs the operation with the support of his cousin Ñaco Eraso for the logistics(man of confidence in Javier de la Gandara's races) and in Zulema and in me the communication cabinet... we all gladly accept the offer, being gratified with the usual generosity of the Asturian businessman.
For my part, I also ask you to compensate Mount Real for my presence, under the sponsorship of the Quarter Ton Cup. He has access without hesitation... by committing himself through his company to the payment of a very important figure in those years... ten million pesetas... that brings the peace of mind to the Yates Club, by ensuring the financing of the World Cup.
To celebrate, we are going to have dinner at an excellent restaurant that a cousin of Suevos had in Barcelona... and I have the pleasure of meeting one of the best friends of the Asturian: Judge Oubiña. The judge, a heavy weight in the National High Court, was a tremendous character... with a category and personality outside the common one... that encouraged a table, simply unforgettable.
Those of you who know Suevos would be amazed... "to Oubiña, he let him speak... the judge would send him to shut up and shut up... he would say with love, but with strong, things like he was a little ghost and Milmi would settle and laugh.".. It certainly struck me and I emphasized it was a delicious night, of a tremendous level in the conversation.
On another night in the Hall we gathered a lot of friends... from Piruchi to Ito Andrade... from Milmi to Chema Ullivarri... from Kankel Pintos to Juan Luis Tuero... We went to dinner, but I had brought an unexpected guest: the great sports journalist of TVE Celso Vázquez, who was also at that time the advertising director of Leche Pascual.
I saw Celso Vázquez Manzanares standing in a light light on the Diagonal... he was unmistakable in a Seat 600 that had been borrowed from him that remained like a pair of 36 shoes to Pau Gasols... he went down and embraced me and Zulema, and we joined the group with which we had left.
After the pica Pauchi that was self-proclaimed as a bowling teacher, suggesting to the group to go play one that was in the Gran Via Barcelona that was then in fashion and there we went raudos... we had a few drinks and the motto was "the one who loses pays.".. we all thought of not losing... because the stills "professional" of Humberto, he was the one who was the last one, among the general cachondeo; but the unforgettable Pirochi to pay nothing... in front of Kankel's horse, who first laughed at the "our friend's ridiculous sport."But then he got mad and a lot, because he didn't pay, and we had to make a neckline...
It seemed like a dream... we didn't have a good time, but very well... the Royal Mount with the sponsorship of General Optica, had a stand in the heart of the Sailing Palace... which was the "Swedish office"... would not be missing any more... every day at first hour was taken out of the safe of the "Bameys gold bottle." for your exhibition... bottle that was removed at the close to return to safe place... it seems that it was yesterday but more than 30 years have fallen from the wing... and many of those quoted are no longer among us...
