The president of the RFEV admits that both CSD and the government of Cantabria did not see with good eyes the idea of "confinement" in the CEAR

RELEASE OF THE REAL SPAIN FEDERATION OF VELA

The Olympic team was for much of March in the waters of Mallorca preparing some international tests along with hundreds of athletes from different countries. The cancellation of these sports tests was made public a few days before the State of Alarm was declared.

In order to isolate the athletes, at risk of contagion due to the training series, the RFEV asked them to put themselves in preventive quarantine at their home in the preparation centre of Santander; where the team has its base and where they reside when there are no movements for competitions or training.

Most of the team welcomed the measure and, on a voluntary basis, were confined to their common house in Santander, where they cannot train but if they work on other more technical facets of their specialty, and under the supervision of the RFEV doctor.

This situation was communicated to the High Council for Sports and the authorities. The CSD informed the RFEV that it recommended the closure of it, to which this federation replied that the CEAR was closed to the public, remaining in it only the athletes of the team as they came from a potential risk situation, without having a response after this statement.

Two weeks after being confined, a sportsman showed some mild symptoms compatible with a high respiratory tract infection, but without having a temperature that could be considered a fever and whose picture was resolved in a few days. Following the official protocols, the Cantabrian Health Service was informed that it determined a two-week isolation for all of them.

Julia Casanueva, President of the Royal Spanish Vela Federation, is very clear with the decision made by the RFEV: "the decision to reunite the athletes here, instead of sending them home, with their parents or family, is the most responsible thing we could do and it was put forward on a voluntary basis. There had been two weeks with hundreds of athletes of different nationalities living together and sending them home would have been a risk to them and their entire environment. Our work is not only to ensure the health of our athletes and their environment, but also to ensure that the virus does not expand further, as we all citizens do."

The RFEV has already requested, in writing and to the relevant authorities, that they be informed of how to act, a request to be made again in order to satisfy the information of the competent health authorities.
