With the Milmi came the revolution to the sail (2nd Delivery)
We are in February 1987... when the Milmi returns to Baiona... he suddenly appears without any reference to Dione 98 and in the midst of the bustle of words and more words, he says very plugged: "Some friends of mine want to sponsor a race like General Optica"... to the question who is it?... the discreet answer: "it's a secret I can't tell you... prepare me a budget and you've already got the approval right now."...
After the meeting Milmi disappears and after a couple of hours calls by phone from the airport of Labacolla in Santiago, before taking the plane that would take you to Madrid: "closed the first race, but in the group they have a company that interests them to enter and therefore, I want two races"... overwhelmed and perplexed by what is happening I say to him: "José Luis can't take any races from the gossip... General Optica has a sponsor, the Gondomar has the same, the Prince also... I see it difficult to make another strong race..."
Swedish insists: "you have to work it out for me, for I have already committed myself."... The pleasant surprise is known for the Royal Mount Directive, and the announcement that Milmi will return to close everything... a manager of the most important, points to the new meeting with Milmi...
The meeting has no waste... we talk about sponsoring a ship, we talk about two races... so all of a sudden the J & B Regata and the Baileys Regata were born... and the boat thing without being definitive, it started to take color. The truth is that, by the way, Suevos was beginning to be strong in the candle... and two eager sponsors of great prestige were committed... it seemed like a dream of which in Baiona, we didn't want to wake up... the Asturian businessman closes the agreement, and he advances a bank heel with six zeros to Mount Real...
The Yates Club had been very strong years ago by Federico Arias (Revista Bitácora) and José Ramón Guimarans (Dorna), had put all the meat on the roast for the Regata Vuelta to Spain... which had shown in national value to Mount Real... but it is no less true that both Arias and Guimerans were very favored by the enormous support of the Club that presided over the great Rafael Olmedo... he got on board Pedro Campos (Banco Atlántico), José Eraso (Pescanova), José María Lastra (Halcón Negro), Juan Luis Luis, and the Presa (La Carreza) (La Pámilitar) (Juan Luis), and La Pántima (La Párbara).
This support was appreciated by Bitácora and Dorna, taking place in Baiona the Eagle Regata of the Autonomy in the spring of 1986... that in match-race with the Selection 37 that Cantabria won, followed by Valencia and Galicia... and in which Pedro Campos, Javier Gandara, José Gandara, Marta Reboreda...
For the General Optic Regatta and for the Tour to Spain, Milmi is interested and graced in the hook to sponsor that "one ton" designed by Tony Castro and armed by the lisboeta Maná Pinheiro, in which they ended up sailing the Gonzalo Romero as patron, Jacobo Fontán, José Delgado, Mundo Sastre, Julio Babé, Paz Andrade... the "Baileys" was the first stone on which Milmi began to build his project... to which a few days later he added to the Contempt-30 of José Manuel Piñeiro, which became "XeitoJ & B."
In the beginning, he did not find it a good idea to sponsor the ships, but he would gradually be excited to see the enormous potential of these actions. "Plan Milmi- Marshall" had arrived at Monte Real by the hand of a different character, along with a nice and splendid... who was moving the foundations of the cruise candle... by José Luis Suevos.
It was a different summer than usual in Baiona, the Rat Chain. (today Onda Zero) He gave his live night programming from the meeting room of the Yates Club, led by Pedro Pablo Parrado... the improvised radio studio received many rutilating characters from the world of sport... especially from football... one of the interviewees were two young Alberto and Antonio Viejo, who had just proclaimed the world champions of vaurien... and who would be in the future two fundamental regatists in the modern history of the Galician and Spanish candle.
In that distant year, the one who was one of the monitors of the School of Sailing of Baiona, Suso Tornero, School that Jorge Alonso led and by the way also collaborated in the "friendly cuckold..." adapted a traditional popular song to highlight the presence of Suevos in Monte Real who said as to his chorus: "My I love you, My I love you... as to the bars of my Commodore... ay JB!, ay JB! you do not do more than baby.
1988 will be the year of Milmi's consecration in the sailing world, but we leave that for the third delivery.
