During the 2018 scale, at the Ocean Summit in Newport, Rhode Island became the first state to sign the UN Clean Seas Environmental Commitment, resulting in a Governor's working group on plastic pollution and the next state ban on plastic bags

Sail Newport and The Ocean Race have announced today that, for the third consecutive edition, The Ocean Race will make its only American scale in Newport (Rhode Island) in the spring of 2022.

The Rhode Island scale will be one of the ten scales of the competition, which will extend for eight months along 38,000 nautical miles around the world, with departure in Alicante (Spain) in October 2021 and arrival in Genoa in June 2022.

After the Newport scale, the fleet will cross the Atlantic on a long and final journey to northern Europe, before ending in the Mediterranean in June 2022.
