The Dutch shipyard Damen transforms an oil tanker into a supply ship for aquaculture
Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam is working on a project to convert a platform supply ship, an offshore, into an aquaculture fish food transporter for Norwegian Eidsvaag, which specializes in the distribution of aquaculture feed. The shipyard stands out with this project that is located "at the top of the market" to "see opportunities to convert platform supply vessels into highly demanded fish food transporters".
Daren's previous experience as a builder of the original ship was fundamental in the Norwegian decision to bet on this shipyard to undertake the conversion... the ship, now renamed "Eidsvaag Opal," was part of an order of six ships that Daren built for the offshore supply company, World Wide Supply, and was delivered in 2013.
The conversion works have included, for the moment, the removal of the main deck of the ship; then the ship was cut in half and the stern section of the ship was moved 10 meters back to leave room for the installation of a new section. In particular, it will consist of 31 new steel sections... 300 tons of redundant ship structure will also be removed as part of the conversion process. When completed, the vessel will be able to carry 2800 tons of food at the same time... and will have five new cranes, as well as an installed discharge.
