Boluda Towage Europe presents the first tug with compliance with Tier III standards
The "Union Koala" tugboat in Boluda Towage Europe received official certification of compliance with the International Maritime Organization's Tier III standards, returning to its service at a ceremony held in the Belgian port of Zeebrugge.
With this recognition, Boluda Towage, the Tow Division of Boluda Corporación Marítima, is the first company of tugs to convert a delivery ship of this maritime service in accordance with the standards Tier III.
The company embarked on this project together with supplier Anglo Belgian Corporation, with the aim of reducing CO2 shipping emissions and addressing the demand of local port authorities for cleaner operations in the port area.
To ensure that the vessel meets the Tier III standard, ABC engine exhaust gases are subject to a special subsequent treatment known as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
The decision to select the "Koala Union" was based on the space available in the tug machine room to install the SCR system... it is still in service in the port area of Zeebrugge and the port authorities attach great importance to sustainability and promote the reduction of the environmental footprint of the ships.
