The Monte Real Club de Yates has been the club chosen to inaugurate the Spanish Vela League, a new competition promoted by the Royal Spanish Vela Federation with the sponsorship of Lotteries and State Bet, which will be held from next Friday in Baiona.

For three days, from Friday day 13 to Sunday day 15, a dozen crews from different nautical clubs in Spain will be hit in a sports program in which a total of 45 tests of the type barlovento sotavento are planned.

There will be multiple short-term races to be completed by the participating teams with a maximum of 5 crew members on board six equal ships, the six Beneteau Fibarians of which the School of Sailing of Mount Real Club of Yates is available.

Thus, under equal technical conditions, the crews will score day by day, without being eliminated, in a general classification of which, once the entire test program is completed, the winner of the competition in Baiona will come out.

There will be a second phase to be held on the Balearic Islands and the team that will win both will be chosen to represent Spain on the international circuit.

Among the participating teams are representatives of some of the places with the most nautical tradition in Spain. From Canarias you will reach Baiona two crews, one from the Real Club Nautico de Arrecife de Lanzarote and one from the Real Club Nautico de Gran Canaria.

From the Mediterranean, Alicante will be the area with the highest representation, as teams of three clubs, the Real Club Nautico de Calpe, the Club Nautico Javea and the Club Nautico Campello will participate.
Also from the Mediterranean will be the Club Náutic El Balís, the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, the Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Club Náutico s'Arenal, organizer of the second part of the Spanish Vela League.

The Basque Country will be represented by the Real Club Marítimo del Abra and by Galicia will compete two crews, one of the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña and one of the Monte Real Club de Yates. The Baionese club, in addition to organizing the tests, will compete with a team to lead Fernando Yáñez.

If weather allows, the three days of testing will begin, every day, at 11: 00 in the morning... Friday, for being the first day of race, there will also be a preparatory meeting prior to the start and Sunday the closing.

The Bombay Gin League the first

In the 1990s, the first such competition was held in our country. Led by the Mount Real Club of Yates, under the name Bombay Gin League... in the same they competed clubs from all over Spain, also in the Figaro Beneteau that had been recently acquired by the Club of Yates in that year, for a grant from the Higher Council of Sports via Real Federación Española de Vela, chaired by Arturo Delgado. I remember that in addition to the support of the brand then of J & B, there was Air Europa - which achieved Francisco José Estévez... Paco Pepe-, and there was even some flight from Barcelona... it was an ordago move, and the absolute victory was for the Royal Maritime Club of Santander... the splendid silver cup as a winner, looks in the trophy window of the hall of the legendary Cantabrian club. It was partly left to celebrate for its high cost, and because also in Baiona we began to organize the Open of Spain of Match Race. Manuel Pedro Seoane, Digital Nautical Editor.
