With departure and arrival in Malta, 100 ships at the Rolex Middle Sea Race
The fourth edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race begins on Saturday at the spectacular Grand Harbour of Malta. Disputed for the first time in 1968, and organized by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, the mythical ocean race of 606 nautical miles that surrounds Sicily in the opposite sense of that of the watch needles has been sponsored by Rolex since 2002.
More than 100 ships will include Wizard of the Americans David and Peter Askew, the absolute winner of the Rolex Fastnet Race 2019 last August, the Courrier recommended the French Géry Trentesaux and the double champion of the Rolex Middle Sea Race, the local Lee Satarian, which premiered its new Artie III.
Among the participants this year there are no Spanish ships missing... is the case of the Sydney 43 GTS Adrián Hotels Macaronesia of Daniel Adrián and the MMW33 Alize of Toni Weijl. As a curiosity, the Volvo 70 Telefónica Black, which competed in the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 under Spanish flag, will compete with British flag and patronized by Lance Shepherd.
The brand was established in 2007 by the American Ramblerdel George David. Durable wind and sea conditions caused only 17 ships to complete the tour, and for David it meant setting the current record of 47 hours, 55 minutes and three seconds. This year, the American returns with the latest version of the Rambler, a priori the fastest ship in the fleet. If conditions favor you, you could improve your own record, although the only condition of real-time victory is already a very attractive incentive. It shows its potential, the Rambler was the fastest monocasco of the past Rolex Fastnet Race, just 16 minutes away from setting a new record.
